One of Medicine Hat’s most well known Christmas traditions is taking place Friday.

The fifth annual Mahoney and Friends show is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the Esplanade – it will feature Medicine Hat’s favourite acoustic two-piece in Mahoney, as well as a number of their musician pals.

“Before we started Mahoney and Friends, we had a show at the Esplanade and they loved the idea of having a big showcase of talent in Medicine Hat every year,” said Trent Roset, who makes of half of Mahoney, alongside Ryan Massini. “This is a Mahoney-style concert – we just bring a lot of our friends along.”

Roset says the band performs a wide range of songs from multiple genres throughout the evening.

“The concert flows from start to finish, with an eclectic choice of music,” he said. “For example, we’ll jump from a song from the ’60s to a modern song, then we’ll dive right into a Celtic song – we move all over the spectrum to accommodate the broadest audience possible.

“We want everyone to hear something they will love and enjoy.”

Roset says the show has continued to grow and evolve every year.

“It changes every year, but over the last half decade we have made a lot of friendships – those people make up the core band who we bring back every year then we cycle in different people every year to keep it fresh and interesting,” he said.

The band has been rehearsing with all of the feature acts for a while now and Roset says this is going to be the biggest and best yet.

“We’ve got around 30 songs this year so the show will be at least two, one-hour sets with an intermission – we’ll probably go over that,” he said. “We started rehearsing a month early and got everyone involved in the song choices.

“This is going to be our year.”

Tickets are still on sale for the show and can be found on tixx.ca. There is a number of standing room tickets and assigned seating ones left.

“There’s assigned seating at the back of the auditorium and on the balcony,” said Roset. “The general admission tickets are the seats up front – that’s where we encourage people to get up, dance and have a good time.

“The general admission is going to be the people partying with us.”
