Library Chat: Library in search of three trustees

By Rick Redmond on November 8, 2019.

The Medicine Hat Public Library is a valued resource, fostering lifelong learning and enhancing the vitality of the community now and into the future. Our library provides equitable and convenient access to books, media, information, many programs and services (internally and via outreach in our community) that help to educate, enrich, entertain and inform our diverse Community. Along with our theatre and various meeting rooms, our library is truly a community hub; a vital societal asset and service in the City of Medicine Hat.

The Medicine Hat Public Library is governed by a volunteer Board of Trustees. The board is an autonomous legal entity governed by the Alberta Libraries Act (Provincial legislation dating back to 1907). The board is responsible for the management, regulation and control of the library. This involves the setting of policy, identification of the community’s needs, development of long and short-term plans and strategies, promotion of the library in our community, assurance of programming and services and the establishment of an annual operating and capital budgets.

In 2020 the board will be developing our long-term strategy, our five-year Plan of Service, various targeted projects and will be continuing fundraising initiatives.

As we head into 2020, the Medicine Hat Public Library has openings and a need for three new board trustees from our community. If you “Love Your Library” and have strong organizational, financial, accounting, technical, strategic planning and/or legal skills, and can work as part of a team, we would welcome your application to be a member of the board of trustees.

Board trustees serve a three-year term and are appointed by Medicine Hat City Council. Trustees meet once a month as a board, with one additional monthly meeting on one of two sub-committees: Advocacy/Policy/Programs and Services or Human Resources and Finance.

If you have any questions regarding the Medicine Hat Public Library Board of Trustees, please reach out to myself (Rick Redmond), or to our chief librarian Ken Feser, via our library phone at 403-502-8525. You can find an application form on the City of Medicine Hat’s Committees, Commissions & Boards webpage at http://www.medicinehat.ca/government/committees-commissions-and-boards.

Applications must be submitted by 4:30 p.m., on Nov. 13.

Rick Redmond, is chair of the Medicine Hat Public Library Board of Trustees.
