Radio Ramblings: The top chocolate treats

By Logan Piekema on October 17, 2019.

Believe it or not, Halloween is just two weeks away. I say believe it or not because every year, the retail world seems to get ready for it a little too prematurely. Halloween candy out in early September? Ridiculous. Then again, I start planning what I’m going to carve in my pumpkin months in advance, so I guess I’m not one to talk.

If you’re looking for an article providing kids with healthy alternatives to sugar-filled sweets, you’ve come to the wrong place. In fact, I’m doubling-down on that with the best chocolate treats to find in your kids’ (or yours, you’re never too old!) trick-or-treat bag, in no particular order.

Oh Henry! – Peanuts, caramel and fudge covered in chocolate. I guarantee your mouth is watering having just read that. Don’t believe the hype of the peanut butter variety, stick with the original. It’s the perfect balance between sweet and salty, much like the next entry on our list.

Reese Peanut Butter Cup – Don’t ask me why, but it took me years to appreciate the greatness of the Reese Peanut Butter Cup. While every other chocolate bar gets scaled down for Halloween (Fun size? What’s fun about eating less candy?), the peanut butter cup stays true to its size for the season. Don’t sleep on the cups filled with Reese’s Pieces either. Those are a gift sent from the heavens. It will be years before they find another candy to stuff more candy inside.

Kit Kat – The real shame here is the Kit Kats you find in the Halloween boxes are only two wafers. Everybody knows the best part of the Kit Kat is you get four wafers coated in milk chocolate…that’s practically four chocolate bars for the price of one! While there are many variations of the Kit Kat on the market these days, stick with the original and you can’t go wrong.

Coffee Crisp – I understand these aren’t for everyone, but since it’s Canadian I feel obligated to include it on the list. How do you like your coffee? Crisp. Especially true in my case, having never drank a cup of hot bean water. Pro tip: have a dust pan or vacuum on standby to get rid of the crumbs you’ll undoubtedly leave behind.

Twix – You know what the best thing about the Twix is? Much like the Kit Kat, once you’re done eating the one bar, there’s another one right there waiting for you. Even in the single-serving snack size for Halloween, Twix packs a punch. It’s the only candy with a cookie crunch.

Now that I’ve supplied you with this list, you know exactly what to look for in your kids candy haul on Halloween. I suggest you “confiscate” these bars for “health reasons” and set them aside for yourself to enjoy. Think of it as your “trick” to their treats.
