Students pick ’em pretty well

Medicine Hat’s Student Vote largely mirrored the results of the Medicine Hat civic election as expected. Student Vote has been an uncanny predictor of many elections in the past, and this time was no exception.

According to the Student Vote results released Monday night for Medicine Hat after the polls closed Ted Clugston was expected to be re-elected by a wide margin, which turned out to be accurate with Clugston winning by more than 5,000 votes over the next nearest candidate.

While displaying good accuracy for the mayoral vote, Student Vote was not as accurate a predictor of the councillor race.

Students gave the nod to councillors Bill Cocks, Brian Varga, Hugh English, Jamie McIntosh, Julie Friesen, Kris Samraj, Les Pearson and Robert Dumanowski to win the election, with Bill Cocks winning the lion’s share of the votes followed distantly by Jamie McIntosh. In reality Cocks and English were both defeated, with Cocks surrendering his place on council to former councillor Phil Turnbull.
