MLA Report: Celebrating our seniors and those who care for them

By Justin Wright on June 18, 2025.

As we recently celebrated Alberta Seniors Week, June 2-8, I want to take this opportunity to recognize the incredible seniors in our community and the dedicated professionals who support them every day.

Our riding is home to exceptional long-term care facilities and senior programs that truly embody the spirit of compassionate care. These local facilities and organizations don’t just provide services – they create communities where our seniors can thrive with dignity and purpose.

I’ve had the privilege of visiting a few of these facilities over my term so far, and I’m consistently impressed by the innovation and heart I witness. I have watched residents participate in intergenerational programs where local school children visit weekly to read stories and share laughs. The joy on both young and old faces reminds us that our seniors have so much wisdom and love to offer.

The staff at these facilities deserve special recognition. During the challenges of recent years, they’ve shown remarkable resilience and creativity. Whether it’s organizing virtual family visits, creating outdoor visiting spaces, or developing new recreation programs, they’ve consistently put residents’ wellbeing first. These aren’t just jobs for them – they’re callings.

Our government remains committed to supporting quality senior care. We’ve invested in improvements to long-term care facilities across Alberta, and locally, including enhanced staffing standards and infrastructure upgrades.

But the real heroes of Seniors Week are our seniors themselves. Many continue to volunteer countless hours at food banks, libraries, and community organizations. Others mentor young entrepreneurs or share their trades and crafts with the next generation. Their contributions make our community stronger and more connected.

To the families navigating care decisions for loved ones, please know that you’re not alone. Our local facilities welcome tours and conversations about care options. The transition to assisted living or long-term care can feel overwhelming, but the professionals in our community are here to support you every step of the way.

As we move forward, I encourage everyone to stay connected with the seniors in their lives. A phone call, a visit, or simply a wave to an elderly neighbor can brighten someone’s entire week. Our seniors built the communities we enjoy today – showing them respect and appreciation is both an honor and a responsibility.

If you’d like to learn more about senior programs in our area or have concerns about senior care, please don’t hesitate to contact my office. Together, we can ensure our community remains a place where seniors are valued, supported, and celebrated year-round.

I wonder who Justin Wright thinks he’s fooling?
When our family needed a bed in a nursing home for a senior member there were over 1,800 people on the Public Waiting List thanks to the fact that these Reformers, trying to pretend they are Conservatives, hadn’t bothered to build more spaces to keep up with an aging population.
We had to take a Private for Profit one , just like these Reformers wanted us to do with their privatization schemes, at a cost of $10,600. per month.
It was a basic $7,000. with an additional $3,600. per month for a full time caregiver she desperately needed.
Klein told our family that the game plan was to make the situation so profitable that the private sector would take it over, just like Danielle Smith wants to do with all our healthcare services. It’s what Reformers have always wanted. Privatization of healthcare and education systems and Smith is no different.

Paying for your COVID Vaccines is just the start of what these Reformers want to do to you, isn’t it? There has never been anything Conservative about them.
How many of these seniors who are blindly supporting them could afford that kind of money to pay for a loved ones care?

Two other seniors I have spoken with have told me that one had to paid out $368,000. to keep his mother in a nursing home and another one had paid out $464,000. to keep both his parents in another one and he was still paying it. How much are you willing to pay out while these Reformers continue to help the rich steal your oil and corporate tax wealth and treat you like a moron?

Celebrating Seniors,I don’t think so.As Fedup said who do you think you are fooling. The cost seniors pay for their medication on seniors Alberta Blue Cross is going up.If this is your commitment to supporting quality senior care you better try again. Many seniors lived month to month. Now Albertans are going to have to pay for the Covid vaccinations, we will see what the cost for care of the non-vaccinated is when hospitalizations increase

Good comments Ronkat. Alberta seniors are in trouble because these Reformers starting with Ralph Klein have put this province in financial ruin by destroying Lougheed’s oil royalties in corporate tax structures. Like this article points out

“Royalties Down 32% Billions In Federal Revenues Lost”
Unlike Alaska who have received $52,000. each for every man, woman and children Alberta seniors got a pathetic $1,000. and billions in debt.

We know Albertans have lost $1.2 trillion thanks to these Reformers helping the rich steal our wealth, yet Albertans continue to support them. Where is the intelligence in that?
