Canada’s laughable quest to be a climate hero

By Letter to the Editor on March 11th, 2020

We must save the people on our planet from people who insist on “saving the planet” from climate catastrophe predicted for decades but never realized. Global mortality from all natural disasters has decreased by 99% since 1920 while the world’s population tripled thanks to improved economies and technologies provided by our modern industrialized world. Production ... Read More »

Breathalyzer legislation should be rescinded

By Letter to the Editor on March 11th, 2020

For centuries we have prided ourselves in our system of jurisprudence whereby citizens charged under the law were presumed innocent until proven guilty. The compulsory stop and blow breathalyzer regimen turns that premise on its head. We are now presumed guilty until we prove our innocence. While perhaps well intentioned, in my view this Orwellian ... Read More »

Weren’t these battles already won in the 1970s?

By Letter to the Editor on March 9th, 2020

The report on supervised consumption sites in Alberta is out and I just heard the health minister say that there was an increase of “social diseases” around these sites. I immediately thought of the song “Officer Krupke” from “West Side Story” where a young blames his bad ways on having a “social disease.” This is ... Read More »

Government’s actions don’t match its words

By Letter to the Editor on March 6th, 2020

Soon the UCP government will expect teachers to bargain in good faith for a contract to insure quality learning conditions in our public schools. This will be challenging because while the government has said that it values the work of teachers, government actions tell a different story. The previous provincial government and teachers worked on ... Read More »

Being the voice for many can make you a target

By Letter to the Editor on March 5th, 2020

I can say that most Albertans are ashamed of the disgusting Greta decal that made news recently and that it reflects not only on Alberta but all of Canada. I also advocate and I learned that when one stands in front of the line they put a target on their back. I learned this because ... Read More »

Try a fire extinguisher

By Letter to the Editor on March 5th, 2020

And the reward for the councillors who voted to spend our tax dollars for a sprinkler system for new home owners is a truck load of buffalo chips. Need a prompt response to fire? A fire extinguisher. The savings for taxpayers could be used to build a public boat dock at Police Point Park. I ... Read More »

Ruminations on determining right from wrong

By Letter to the Editor on March 4th, 2020

Disclaimer: Tumours in my brain, not the devil, made me do it. They (the tumours, not the devils) are brilliant white on my CAT scan, likely causing synaptic malfunctions. So this is satire, for those who need it to be. Fear of death made man invent god or gods. Most humans fear a permanent end ... Read More »

Land issue should have been clarified early

By Letter to the Editor on March 4th, 2020

The people protesting the gas pipeline crossing the traditional lands of Indigenous people make a very strong point against the reliance which Alberta Premier Jason Kenney and other pipeline supporters place on band councils’ approvals of the project. It is most likely that the authority of the band councils, coming as it does from the ... Read More »

Letting people break the law is bad for the future

By Letter to the Editor on March 3rd, 2020

I just had the word “anarchy” used in the same sentence with hereditary chiefs and railroad blockades. I confirmed the definition with Wikipedia. So, the question that comes to mind is: Do the chiefs and their followers truly believe in lawlessness just for themselves and their pet ideas or do they believe that all of ... Read More »

Left-leaning agendas worsening issues in education

By Letter to the Editor on February 29th, 2020

Once again teachers across Alberta and Saskatchewan are demanding that governments spend more to improve classroom conditions. The diversity within individual classrooms is staggering. Add to that the increased stresses of having teachers become the solution to every moral issue in society and you make teaching a nearly impossible task. Too much time is spent ... Read More »
