Letter: Hat utility prices could be worse

By Letter to the Editor on January 19, 2021.

Dear editor,

I moved to Medicine Hat from Grande Prairie and I thought I would share what it looks like when a city doesn’t have control of its utilities and other services.

Let’s compare my bill from last month with one from a friend in Grande Prairie. Roughly the same size house, family and usage of utilities.

My bill in Medicine Hat: $305.55

His bills in Grande Prairie:

– Direct Energy Gas: $170.28

– Direct Energy Electric: $189.84

– Aquatera (water,sewer,garbage,recycling): $104.57

Total: $464.69

Three profit driven companies charging an extra $159.14 for the same product. Every business and household will pay more each month until forever. The publicly owned utility company can change with the times, but once it’s gone it’s gone.
