Residents and staff of the Good Samaritan West Highland Centre participated in a fundraising walk called Run, Walk and Roll Friday around the West Highlands Park.
Those participating in the walk were encouraged to dress as superheroes and there were quite a few that took advantage of the opportunity to do just that.
Director of communications and fund development for Good Samaritan Society and Good Samaritans Canada, James Frey, said the event was their third annual virtual event.
“What we do is we have teams all over Alberta and BC from our care homes and from the community go out and walk, it’s not a race, it’s not a walkathon or anything. We want people to get out and just get some activity, but also raise some funds for the care homes that we have,” said Frey.
He said the event was particularly for West Highlands and residents, families and staff have come out to support it and raised money towards extra enhancements for their place of residence that are not covered by provincial health funding.
“One of the things that they are raising funds for this home is for a wheelchair bicycle. An e-bike that has a platform in the front, where a wheelchair can be rolled onto it and they can take residents out for a bike ride,” said Frey.
He explained that their people were encouraged to dress up as their theme was superheroes.
“We think that everybody who works in our care homes or works in our community programs are our heroes, so we want everybody to embrace that message,” said Frey.
He added that everybody is a hero and a good samaritan in their own way as they are giving their time, money, gifts or giving things that can really help seniors and help other individuals in their care.
