Local church hosting community prayer event
for municipal candidates
By medicinehatnews on September 2, 2021.
Galt Gardens will be be a place of prayer tonight.
Hosted by Amazing Grace Community Church, Thursday’s Prayer in the Park #YQL, which starts at 7 p.m., aims to bring together prospective councillors and mayoral candidates with the rest of the community.
The AGCC’s Rohan Crown chose to move ahead with co-hosting the event after local speaker Colette Aikema approached him. “It was a no-brainer, really,” says Crown, “My only question was, ‘Wait. Why haven’t we done this before?'”
Aikema said last year she saw firsthand how the City’s leadership struggled to cooperate.
“In fact, they could barely look each other in the eye,” she said. “As a Christian I want to see the church community come together with the new candidates – Lethbridge’s next visionaries and lawmakers – and not just meet them in person. We want to see Lethbridge pray together for their unity and for the state of our city.”
The work for Prayer In The Park began in June after a format was decided.
While Pastor Crown invited church and community leaders, Aikema was busy arranging meetings with every city council and mayoral candidate.
While it sounds simplistic and spiritual, Aikema says nothing could be needed more in southern Alberta.
As a young mother of three and a public speaker with a Calgary-based ministry, Aikema said she looks forward to seeing the church confess and repent of its inaction, while recommitting to the practice of prayer as a community.
