NEWS PHOTO SEAN ROONEY Willy Thiessen of the Rosemary Rockets (3) puts up a shot over Eagle Butte Talons Kayden Vollman (10) and Walker Long (15) during varsity boys basketball game at Eagle Butte Tuesday.
In a battle between winless varsity boys basketball teams, the Eagle Butte Talons hung on Tuesday over the Rosemary Rockets.
The Southeast Basketball Conference matchup in Dunmore saw the host Talons lead by double digits until the final minute, eventually nailing down a 70-65 final and improve to 1-4.
Rosemary, now 0-4 in league play, fought to the last buzzer and made it interesting thanks to some pressure defence and a few Hail Mary’s.
Forward Walker Long led Eagle Butte with 29 points, many of them by getting behind the Rockets defence on fast breaks.
Teammate Kayden Vollman added 11 points, eight coming in the second quarter.
But it was only 39-34 at the half, thanks to the play of Rockets Willy Thiessen and Carter Norton. Norton had 15 of his 16 points before the break. Thiessen, the anchor of Rosemary’s offence, had 13 at the half but threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Talons in the second half, finishing with 36 points on the night.
The one-man show wasn’t enough.
McCoy leads the varsity boys standings at 4-0. In varsity girls, McCoy is 2-0 while 2-1 Eagle Butte and 1-2 Crescent Heights were playing late Tuesday.
Junior varsity standings see Brooks leading the boys with a 5-1 record, and McCoy atop the girls at 2-0.
