The Medicine Hat Hawks wrestling club held its home tournament Saturday at Hat High, with more than half of the host athletes earning medals.
Hawks coach Darren Klein reported 61 medals from the day-long event, in which he said there were more than 100 Medicine Hat youth taking to the mats.
With the Alberta Winter Games plus two sets of high school championships on tap for the first quarter of the year, the Hawks meet was a good kick-start for many, though the club members have kept busy learning new skills and tactics for months now.
In the junior and senior high divisions, there were plenty of familiar names topping the podium. Gold medals were won by Kiana Ivey, Adrian Campbell, Elijah Andreas, Jay Callan and Dylan Callan.
Silver medals went to Abby Bacon, Josh Lovis, Bailie McNaughton, Lucia Blazquez, Aidan Mackinnon, Raymond Ngo, Aayden Callan and William McDougaldt.
Bronze medals were earned by Nathan Mackinnon, Jaxin Crosschild, Taylor Stubbins, Joy Lobert, Alicia Dominguez, Mikayla Elrich, Walker Entz, Sam Bjardson, Jose Lopez, Logan Demontigmy and Logan Wells.
In the elementary division, medals were won by: Gold – Gavin Russel, Truman Hallawel, Kade Lindford and Liam Carson; Silver – Draton Clendenan, Max Landreville, Reece Tschritter and Tucker Worth; Bronze – Janessa Jackson and Nolan Jensen.
Roy Wilson wrestlers who made the podium were: Gold – Blake Clark; Silver – Yazan Al-Yassine, Kaedan Buckler, Casey Leblanc and Nathan Kaba; Bronze – Tyana Schaffer, Kira Reid, Maddox Zadko and Zack Heit.
In the elementary division medal winners included: Gold – Sylvan Van Maarion, Lucas Orton and Cooper Buckler; Silver – Beckem Kessler, Wryker Brosnikoff, Mohammad Al-krad, Carter Prince, Stella Wagner, Marshal Moore and Tryton Van Maarion; Bronze – Sam Marshal, Bella Rushton, Myers Snell, T.j. Desjarlais, Rudy Albers, Zennon Nymans and Tye Becker.
Vikings’ Carson Imes won gold as well.
