Burns Valkenberg and Associates – an institution in the local financial services community – is joining the national network of accounting giant Grant Thornton, that company announced Friday morning.

The deal keeps operations main and regional branches of Medicine Hat-based BVA open to give it wider presence in southern Alberta and southwest Saskatchewan, according to a release.

The 40-year-old local firm employees 30 people and has satellite offices in Brooks, Bow Island, Oyen, Foremost and Fort Macleod in Alberta, as well as Maple Creek, Sask. Those will remain in operation, according to a release, and be folded in to Grant Thornton’s operations, while new advisory services will be made available locally.

“Providing the best possible service to our clients is our focus,” said Melanie Harty, managing partner with BVA LLP. “We see tremendous benefits in joining Grant Thornton … (that) will further strengthen the knowledge, resources and services we bring to the communities where we live and work.”

Along with traditional service, BVA also brings to the relationship the “CFO Solution” program that offers part-time controllers and accounting staff to owner-managed businesses. That will continue to be managed out of the Medicine Hat location.

“We’re very pleased to welcome (them),” said Tracey Zehl, a managing partner with Grant Thornton. “Together we’ll assist even more businesses in southern Alberta to manage change, identify new opportunities and reach their full potential.”

Grant Thornton is a major accounting and advisory firm whose member and correspondent firms operate in over 130 countries worldwide.
