No hometown bowlers wound up on the top of the podium at the Alberta 5-pin Open Bowling Championships, but there was a zone representative who came pretty close to earning a spot at nationals.

At Medicine Hat’s Panorama Lanes this past weekend, Lethbridge’s Dianne Violini, competing in her 50th provincial tournament, was first in the ladies singles event round robin but fell to Calgary’s Kelsy Wilton in the playoff final, 253-238. Wilson had beat Medicine Hat’s Bobbi Sisko in the semifinal after Sisko reeled off two straight victories in the stepladder format playoffs.

Violini had the best average, 256.5, through 10 round robin games to earn the bye to the final. But Wilton, who rolled 253.2 to finish second, put up a massive 368 in the first game of the finals to set up the decisive victory.

In the men’s singles event it was Edmonton’s Adam Weber beating Central Alberta’s Karie Kreutz 229-189 for the title. Weber had a first-place 265.4-pin average in the round robin to get the bye to the final. Lethbridge’s Derek Lewicki wound up fourth. Medicine Hat’s Alexander Young was seventh.

Calgary took the mixed team crown, holding off Edmonton in the late going of a 25-match round robin event. Team South, including Medicine Hat bowlers Cody Smith, Jenn Langejans and Crystal Nunweiler, finished fourth.

The Central zone took the men’s team event, which came down to the last set of matches as they held off Edmonton. South was again fourth with Hatters Young, Shawn Mackinnon and Troy Seitz on the team.

Calgary also claimed the women’s team trophy, again, just ahead of Edmonton, with the South squad including the Hat’s Sisko, Torrie Hinzman and Larisa Long taking third.

Champions advance to nationals in Quebec May 30-June 2.
