For millions around the country, New Years Eve is a night of celebration and a time to look forward to the coming year.
For tennis players in the Hat, it’s a great time to smack some tennis balls around thanks to the annual Renato Franchetto Memorial Classic held at the Cypress Centre.
On the men’s side of the tournament, Trevor Riddell and Cal Heller came out on top after a marathon match against Craig Weich and Dave Reinheller (4-6, 6-4, 6-2).
“This is the first time I think I’ve played a tournament with Cal,” said Riddell. “It feels great to win, it was a lot of fun and now I’m pretty tired after that weekend.”
With such a back-and-forth championship match, Riddell says it was his team’s consistency that helped them win.
“We just needed to stay steady,” he said. “They were playing pretty great, so we just had to keep holding the ship.”
On the women’s side, Erika Miller and Lauren Danroth were victorious over Xiaojiang Dai and Sheila Reinheller (6-2, 6-2).
“We feel good, it was a good win for us,” said Miller. “Today felt a little easier for us, because we haven’t been out as much because it’s winter. Getting our timing back on the second day made it feel better for us.”
