The Hat High Kwahommies opened the Southern Alberta High School Girls Basketball League season with a home court comeback over the Catholic Central Cougars on Wednesday.

The Kwahommies shook off a nine-point third quarter deficit and rallied to a 75-72 victory thanks in part to a 21-point night from Bretonnie Stenhouse.

Stenhouse’s efforts were assisted by 19 points from guard Rhiannon Ware, 14 more from Brooklyn Kaczynski and another 12 out of Hailee Parker.

Catholic Central’s Jaden Thomas had a game-high 25 points and Alex Pasquotti added another 23 in the loss.

The junior varsity Kwahommies also kicked off their season with a victory after defeating the Cougars 63-50 earlier in the evening. Hannah Salmon, Hailee Parker and Taya Karsten all had eight points for Hat High in the win.

Jordan Goruk put up 17 points for Catholic Central in the loss.

The Kwahommies return to the court Friday at Chinook High School while the Mohawks welcome the Coyotes to Hat High tonight to kick off the 4A boys basketball season. The junior varsity squads will square off at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity boys at 8 p.m.
