Some solid arms and sound defence has put the Lethbridge Elks in the win column to start the Mary Oikawa Memorial Tournament.
The Elks doubled up the Medicine Hat Moose Monarchs 6-3 to kick off the tournament Friday afternoon at Spitz Stadium.
Lethbridge’s Wyatt Tomalty threw five innings on his way to the win before Raleigh Ferby came on in the last two innings to round out the win.
The Moose Monarchs were able to tag on a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the tournament hosts turned a 1-4-3 double play to end the threat and salt the win.
The Monarchs started their conference schedule with a 14-13 loss to Lethbridge May 30, then split with the Billings Scarlets June 7 before losing 16-15 Saturday and 11-6 Sunday at the Great Falls Chargers.
Medicine Hat takes on the Calgary Junior Dinos and East Central Bulls Saturday, with the Oikawa tournament final slated for Sunday.
