The Medicine Hat Avalanche rolled to a provincial ringette title Sunday.

At Lacombe, the Avs beat Strathmore’s Ice 8-6 in the under-19 B championship game, finishing off an unbeaten weekend despite a few close calls.

Courtney Stock’s second goal held up as the winner in the gold medal game. Kelli Bowles also had a pair, while Alexandra Stanke, Jenna McDonnell, Lauren Hughes and Emily Hudson scored the others.

The road to the title started well, with a 16-4 win over Fort Saskatchewan Friday. They also beat Fort McMurray 15-2 before the tighter contests came in to focus. A 5-3 win over the AC (Airdrie/Cochrane) Thunder ensured a semifinal berth, then the host Lacombe Edge awaited with a guaranteed medal on the line.

Against the Edge, Medicine Hat led 6-4 late but Lacombe made it 6-5 with 27 seconds left. But it wasn’t enough, as the Avalanche held on with two goals from Hughes, and singles from McDonnell, Bowles, Stock and Taylor Chase.

Hughes was the team’s leading scorer, potting a total of 10 goals in five games. Bowles had six. Other scorers were Ami Dynes, Camryn Selwood, Jensen Wilk, Erica Brost, Meagan Rewuski and Karissa Simpson.
