A three-point swing in the seventh end left Holly Stroh and her foursome staring down a difficult task in Sunday’s Ladies Bonspiel A Event final at the Medicine Hat Curling Club, but a masterful series of shots flipped the script.
Stroh’s squad came back to take two points in the eighth to clinch a 5-4 victory over Nanette Dupont’s Lethbridge based team on the heels of a pair of near-perfectly placed shots by Stroh’s sister and third, Carla Weinheimer.
“It was key that she made that double there,” said Stroh.
“I think that really set us up for the end. Otherwise we could have been in big trouble.”
Stroh added the seventh-end scare could have actually been a lot worse. In fact, the victory may well have come down to hold Dupont’s team to just three.
“I was actually pretty pleased they didn’t get four,” said Stroh. “I was just trying to make a double on a couple of those shots and keep them to a couple so we had a chance in the last end.”
Darla Seitz and Laura Deschamps went on to clinch third and fourth in the A event, respectively.
Terry Lertner’s local team took the B event title with a mercy rule victory over Lisa Despas’ squad out of Brooks, while Dee Cowan’s squad took third with a win over Gaylene Senft’s team.
In the C event, it was Sandy Bell’s local squad, including Vicki Sjolie, Hailey Rempel and Verna Moch, who defeated Shirley Roy’s team in six ends to claim title.
Janice Poberznick’s team took third in the C event, followed by Vivian Moch’s team in fourth.
