They haven’t played a single conference game in 2017, but the Medicine Hat College men’s basketball team is on the rise anyhow.
The Rattlers moved up four spots to No. 3 in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association rankings released Tuesday, a bit of a surprise since the CCAA typically doesn’t look any further than conference results to determine placings. At 5-2 the Rattlers are technically tied for second in their division, and the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference makes no mention on its standings page that both losses were originally wins, taken away by an ineligible player penalty handed down in November.
In reality, the Rattlers are 7-0, and they’ll return captain Jordan Wynter to the lineup when they head to Briercrest this weekend.
It’s apparent the CCAA did look at a particular exhibition win this past weekend. Medicine Hat didn’t just beat 11-1 NAIT on Saturday, they did so in convincing fashion: 96-58. That was after an 80-66 Friday win over Concordia. NAIT, formerly No. 3, fell to No. 6 in the rankings.
Medicine Hat’s men’s volleyball team is also ranked nationally, staying put at No. 12 after sweeping Ambrose to begin the second semester. At 11-3 they trail only Red Deer in the South Division: the Kings are also No. 1 in the country.
