The Medicine Hat Avalanche learned from a loss, and subsequently ran the table at the Lethbridge Chinook ringette tournament this past weekend.
The under-19 team fell 4-2 to the Airdrie/Cochrane Thunder Friday, but regrouped to not only earn a spot in Sunday’s final, but dominate it too.
Wins of 11-2 (over South Calgary Rush), 10-2 (over Buffalo Plains’ Phantoms) and 10-0 (over the Lethbridge Heat) made it clear the Avs were on a mission to get another shot at the Thunder.
Despite a lengthy day, they still had plenty of energy in the rematch for gold. Courtney Stock’s goal 23 seconds in was a sign of things to come in a 6-3 victory. Stock added a second goal while Emily Hudson, Brooklyn Burzminski, Alyssa Gosse and Taylor Chase rounded out the attack.
Showing just how deep their talent pool is, every skater on the Medicine Hat roster tallied at least two points throughout the five games they played. Kelli Bowles led with 12 points, Chase had a team-high seven goals as part of her 11, and Hudson had 10 points.
The Avs’ top-scoring defenceman was Alexandra Stanke with five points. Goalie Sydney Stasienko earned the shutout against Lethbridge.
Also in Lethbridge, the under-12 Element finished fifth, though no game scores were reported. The team recovered from three straight round robin losses to win the fifth-place game, though no opponent was mentioned.
Medicine Hat’s two under-10 Step 1 teams faced off last Wednesday, with the Monsters edging Chaos 6-4.
Nevaeh Ross, Makenna Duncan, Annika Rostotski-Ashton and Alyssa Makepeace had goals for the Monsters, while Kaylyn Pywell, Leighton Wright, Miley Hieb and Sutton Provost replied for Chaos.
