Marie Yvonne Ruff, 81, of High River, Alberta, passed away suddenly at the High River General Hospital, on November 22, 2017, surrounded by her loved ones. Born on March 11, 1936, in Taree, New South Wales, Australia, Marie was the daughter of the late Stanley and Gladys Stace (nee McKay). She is survived by her loving family: husband Solomon Ruff; her sons, Craig Ruff and wife Shauna Laubman-Ruff; and Christopher Ruff; her grandchildren, Janae and Dannica Ruff; her sisters, Phyllis Atkins, Heather Atkins, Thelma Wallis and Janice Jones; as well as many other relatives and close friends. Marie was predeceased by her brothers, Frank Stace and Colin Stace; and her sisters, Margaret Andrews and Betty Matthews.
Marie worked as Registered Nurse in Australia before she came to Canada, met Sol, and married him in Medicine Hat on October 31, 1964. Their sons, Craig and Christopher, came along in 1969 and 1972 respectively. Marie will always be remembered as a woman of special charm, with a unique wit and exuberant sense of humour. She was loving, charitable, and proudly Australian. She loved her family, her friends and her dogs. The Funeral Service will be held at ST. BARNABAS ANGLICAN CHURCH, 635 – 4 Street SE, on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Oz Lorentzen officiating. Mrs. Margaret “Rose” Janzen beloved wife of Mr. Jacob Janzen of Medicine Hat passed away on Sunday, November 26th, 2017 at the age of 75 years. Besides her husband Jacob, Margaret leaves to cherish her memory her son, Cory (Loralee) Janzen; her daughter, Charmaine Janzen; five grandchildren, Tanea (Marshall) Kuystermans, Braiden Janzen, Daniel (Danica) Janzen, Sarah Janzen, and Nathan Janzen; one great grandson, Jacob Kuystermans; two brothers, Harry Wiebe, and Clarence (Justine) Wiebe; one sister, Lydia Ann Bueckert; two sisters-in-law, Ann (Bill) Flear, and Evelyn Markowsky; and three brothers-in-law, Henry Braun, Henry Janzen, and John (Mary Ann) Janzen; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and close friends. Rose was predeceased by her parents, Abram and Margaret Wiebe; her sisters-in-law, Clara Wiebe, Olga (Henry) Braun, and Joyce Wiebe; her brothers-in-law, Henry Bueckert, and Orest Markowsky. Rose was born to Abe D. and Margaret Wiebe on April 30th, 1942 at Beaver Flat, Saskatchewan. She married Jacob Janzen at Herbert, Saskatchewan on August 31st, 1968 and took her teaching degree at the University of Saskatchewan. Rose taught school and worked in customer service until her retirement in June of 2017. Favorite pastimes were crocheting, jig saw puzzles, reading, and making Mennonite food. She was an excellent housekeeper and an amazing cook. She was known for her quick wit and sense of humour, generous heart, turning strangers into friends and loving them like family. Rose enjoyed time spent with her family and friends and will be deeply missed by all those who knew and loved her. A Time of Remembrance will be held at HILLCREST EVANGELICAL CHURCH (in the gymnasium) with lunch to follow, 3785 13th Avenue SE, on Saturday, December 2nd, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Jamie McDonald officiating. Gerald Wilbert Hillis, beloved husband of Laura Hillis of Medicine Hat, passed away on Tuesday, November 28th, 2017 at the age of 71 years. Gerald also leaves to cherish his memory four children, Kim (Taras) Stokalko, Shawn (Christie) Hillis, Chrystal (Aaron) Heinz and Greg (Darcy) Hillis; seven grandchildren, Stephanie Stokalko (Dylan Wyatt), Sierra Stokalko (Cole Plaskan), Jace Hillis, Alexis Heinz, Payton Heinz, Teyla Hillis and Ronen Hillis; one great grandson, Carter; three brothers, Lyle (Joyce) Hillis, Dale (Jeanette) Hillis and Dennis (Bernice) Hillis; one sister, Lynn Gourlay; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He loved golfing, camping, driving truck, reading and watching western movies. But above all Gerald loved spending time with his family, especially his grandkids. Terrance Eugene “Terry” Ballman of Medicine Hat, passed away on Thursday, November 23rd, 2017 at the age of 64 years. Terry was predeceased by his parents, Maurice and Norma Ballman. Terry was a very kind-hearted man who was willing to help anyone in need. He loved animals and the outdoors, and especially loved getting out and sharing time with friends. It is with heavy hearts that the family of Alvin Albert “Shorty” Heringer, beloved husband of Patricia, announce his passing at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Saturday, November 25, 2017, at the age of 80 years. Along with Patricia, Shorty leaves to cherish his memory four children, Sherry (Andy) McGrogan, Tom (Cindy) Heringer, Lorelei (Kirby) Lindal and Wendy (Kevin) Kroeker; grandchildren, Ryan McGrogan (Madi Sanchez), Courtney Heringer (Shawn Benedict), Samantha and Kylie Heringer, Taylor and Julia Lindal, Bailee Shantz (Michael Allan) and Hayden Kroeker; grandson-in-law, Sean O’Beirn; brother, Harry Heringer and sister, Erva Both. Shorty was predeceased by his parents; granddaughter, Kayle McGrogan; five brothers and one sister. Shorty was born in Rimbey, Alberta, raised in Carlos, Alberta and moved to Medicine Hat in 1974. He married the love of his life, Patricia Channon, on August 6, 1959, in Bashaw, Alberta. Shorty was the proud owner and operator of Paradise Valley Golf Course. After many years of enjoying the green grass, Shorty retired and sold the golf course in 2008. He was proud of his accomplishments throughout his life and loved his family immensely. His smile and wit will be missed by many! Hugo Kappel of Calgary, passed away at the Rockyview Hospital in Calgary on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at the age of 80 years.
He was the loving father of Richard (Anna) Kappel of Medicine Hat, Victor Kappel of Calgary, Roland Kappel (Pam Hodgkinson) of Medicine Hat. Hugo will also be dearly missed by his three grandchildren Braden (Meagan) Kappel, Christopher and Daniel Kappel.
He will also be lovingly remembered by Lily (Willy) Kappler, Ella Fuhrman and Erika Baedke. Hugo was predeceased by his beloved wife Lore Kappel and his parents Frederick and Helena Kappel.

Lammigje Hazelaar went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, November 28, 2017, at the age of 90 years. Lammy will be dearly missed by her daughters, Marlene Hazelaar and Chris (Jim) Harty; grandchildren, Jonathan Hazelaar, William Hazelaar, David (Danielle) Hazelaar, Kevin Hazelaar, Justin (Pam) Harty, Ryan Harty (Simone Schimpf); great-grandchildren, Mason and Brielle Harty; brothers, Willem (Dina) Hummel, Cornelis (Tita) Hummel and Lucas (Susan) Hummel; sisters-in-law, Betty (Bill) Schollaardt, Lynn Hazelaar, Rita Hazelaar and Audrey Hazelaar as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John Hazelaar in 1975 and son, Lew Hazelaar in 2007 as well as five sisters and two brothers. Lammy was born in De Wijk, Drente, the Netherlands on July 15, 1927 to Lucas and Willemina Hummel and was raised in Hollandscheveld. She, along with her mother, father and four brothers immigrated to Canada in the spring of 1949 and settled in Nobleford. In 1954, she married the love of her life, John Hazelaar, and together they made their home in Medicine Hat where they had three children. In 1965, they moved to Redcliff to start their own greenhouse business. After John’s death, Lammy and the children moved back to Medicine Hat where she worked at the All Seasons Restaurant until 1985. She enjoyed gardening and did lots of crocheting. Lammy enjoyed watching her grandchildren play hockey and soccer in Medicine Hat as well as visiting her grandchildren in Edmonton. She loved travelling and went to many different countries, enjoying each trip she took. Lammy was a quiet woman with a strong faith in God making it easier to go through life with Him as her guide. She had difficult times but also a very rich life which she appreciated to the end. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Family wish to express their appreciation to everyone at the Meadow Ridge Seniors Village for taking care of their Mom this past year. Thank you to Diane and Pastor George for the time that they spent with Lammy during her final weeks. A special thank you to the staff at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice for making their Mom’s last days as comfortable as possible. This cowboy has ridden off into the sunset – we are heart broken to announce the passing of Alexander “Alex” Lerner on Sunday, November 26, 2017, at the age of 95 years, beloved husband of the late Katherine Lerner. He leaves to cherish his memory two children Diane (Wayne) Gutfriend and Linda (Elden) Roth; seven grandchildren Jennifer (Michael) McBride, Stephanie (Ryan) Armstrong, Melissa (Cory) Montean, Matthew Gutfriend, Katelin Roth, and Christopher Williamson, Patrick Williamson and their father Jim Williamson; five great grandchildren, Bayleigh and Abigail McBride, Declan and Annaka Armstrong, MacKenzie Montean; one brother, Dick (Tillie) Lerner and Margaret Shaw all of Medicine Hat as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Katherine on April 4, 2006, one daughter Sandy Williamson on November 12, 2004 as well as many brothers and sisters. Alex was born on July 5, 1922 in Fox Valley, Saskatchewan, the 7th of 11 children. He spent some time training horses in Ontario before buying his farm at Tilley, Alberta. On April 23, 1955, he married Katherine Gukert, they had three daughters and in 1969, they moved to Medicine Hat. He was employed with the Alberta Department of Highways, then for the City of Medicine Hat – Municipal Works. In retirement he enjoyed camping, travelling with friends and family. Alex talked to everyone he met, and loved being with his family. Thanks to everyone who assisted Dad in his later years.
