Grandpa loved to watch sports, even to the point of offering the referee his glasses at his grandson’s hockey game. He was so good with numbers that he could add up any totals without a calculator. He always carried a pocket of change and whenever he was shopping, he stopped to give his granddaughter a toonie. Izzy met a lot of people through his employment with Pioneer Coop at Stewart Valley. He ran his own business with Bonogofsky’s Triple S Grocery Store. He also worked at Goodyear, OK Economy, ALCB, and, when semi-retired, at Medicine Hat Linen. CHICHENKO

Carl James Chichenko, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 28, 2017, at the age of 89 years, with his beloved wife Phyllis Chichenko of Medicine Hat at his side. He also leaves to cherish his memory five children, Margaret (Viljem) Dremelj and Gloria (Barry) Treiber all of Medicine Hat, Adam Frisch of Calgary, Sandy (Paul) Keenan of Medicine Hat and Darlene Dorchak of Calgary; twelve grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren; one sister Ann “Helen” Scherck; two nephews George (Loretta) Chichenko and Terry Scherck. He was predeceased by his parents, Grace and Jimosa Chichenko; one daughter Karen Beck in November of 2007; one brother Howard; and one sister Kay. Dad was born in a little known corner southwest of Piapot, Saskatchewan. As a young man, he worked on a sheep ranch near Maple Creek. During those years, he would travel into Medicine Hat to visit his sister and brother-in-law to go to a “Saturday Night Dance”. Dad’s sister introduced him to Mom and he invited Mom to the dance. It was a great dance! It wasn’t long after, Dad moved to BC where he found work in a lumber mill and then brought Mom to BC. On December 19, 1964, Dad married Mom, the love of his life. Dad left the lumber mill to work for the Maple Ridge Water Department. Dad was very proud to work for the Municipality and stayed there until he retired. Dad had many talents and hobbies that he shared with Mom including camping, fishing, canning fish!! doing Word Search puzzles and growing hundreds of geraniums in his greenhouse which he would sell very reasonably to many of his friends and neighbours! As well, Dad – along with Mom – loved to restore, refinish and re-upholster furniture. They operated their home based business in Maple Ridge for 45 years. After moving back to Medicine Hat in 2009, Dad loved to work in his vegetable and flower gardens and tend to his yard. At the age of 88, Dad stilled turned his garden in the spring and summer with a shovel and then have one of his sons-in-law rototill it. Dad was a kind and loving man who gave his all to his dear wife and family. As a family, we will miss his wisdom, home remedies and sense of humor. There is no doubt Dad’s presence will be missed – but the world is definitely a better place because he was here. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday from 1:00 – 1:55 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev.
