1933 ~ JOHANNA “HANS”

PETRONELLA BOUMAN ~ 2017
Johanna Petronella (Rozestraten) Bouman, age 84, passed away September 8, 2017. Hans was predeceased by her husband Bert of 62.5 years. She leaves behind her daughters, Joanne (Jay) DeJong, Bernice Bouman (David Peacock) and Audrey (Bruce) Bain; and her son, Harry Bouman. Hans was “Oma” to nine grandchildren; Mike, Erica. Anita, Cory, David, Ian, Jennifer and Clinton; “Great Oma” to Jaxon, Journey, Mallory, Luca, Rex and Violet. Hans was one of six children born in Amsterdam on March 14, 1933, and is survived by her sister Nelly Van Eysden. Hans lived through the war, working in a factory where she was chosen to model some of the blouses. She loved to play cards, get dressed up and “turn heads”. She caught Bert’s eye and eventually was convinced to move to Medicine Hat, leaving everyone she knew behind. Hans learned English on the job and started dishwashing at the Greyhound, wearing a three piece suit and heels. The couple spent ten years tending bar at The Sergeant’s Mess. Hans then continued being the best at customer service while working at the Woolworth’s lunch counter, Central Meat and Sausage, and H and R Delicatessen. The Bouman family grew up with other Dutch families, and Bert and Hans were proud members of the Dutch Canadian Club and the Medicine Hat Legion. Hans and Bert lived their last years at the Haven Care Centre. Her door was always open, and Hans become close to the care team. The family is so grateful to Helen Santer (RN), the staff at Haven Care Center, Dr Monty, and the Nurses and Doctors at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, who treated mom with kindness these last six weeks. Her illness, stroke or heart issues never dismissed her ability to say “Thank you” or “give me a kiss”. The Funeral Service will be held at the Wuerfel Auditorium, 1720 Bell Street Southwest, on Friday, September 15th, 2017 at 2:00 pm with Pastor Bob Findley officiating. Family and close friends are invited to share in a coffee prior to the Celebration of Han's life from 1:30 – 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Saamis Prairie View Cemetery. Those who would like are invited join the family at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 17 Canteen, 702 2 St SE, Medicine Hat at 5 p.m. Memorial gifts in Han's memory may be made to the charity of one's choice. ALBERTA AUGUSTA “BERTA” WOOLFREY

Berta Woolfrey passed away on August 31, 2017 at the age of 97. She was born in Bingville, AB, on August 5, 1920, one of eight children of Danish Immigrants, Laura and Hans Hansen. She attended school in Medicine Hat where she met Bill Woolfrey. They married on June 8, 1940, the same day that Bill joined the Army. When Bill was posted overseas, Berta went to live with Bill’s parents and helped run the family dairy farm – milking cows and delivering milk to customers. Bill returned after the war, and the couple had two sons, Ted (1941) and Dick (1946), and they continued to run the Dairy Farm until the late 1970's and in 1990 they sold the land to Ted and his partners to develop Cottonwood Coulee Golf Course. Berta was a hardworking and resourceful person. In addition to farm chores, she was a seamstress, dog groomer and general "handywoman" who was not afraid to tackle any project. "Waste not, want not" was one of her favorite expressions but Berta also liked to have fun. She had a flare for fashion, was always well-dressed with her hair done and ready to enjoy a good party. She and Bill travelled extensively and in retirement enjoyed taking their RV to Puerta Penasco, Mexico for the winter months. At age 70, Berta took up golf, made new friends and took golf trips to Thailand and Portugal. In her later years, she took great joy in being able to spend time helping to raise her great grandchildren, and she and Morgan developed a very close bond.
Berta is lovingly remembered by her daughter-in-law, Marion; granddaughters, Cathy (Craig Wood) and Carole (Joe Harris); great grandchildren, Will Wood, Morgan Wood (Cole Lane) and BJ Wisnowski (Megan); and great great granddaughters, Olivia and Charley; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Berta was predeceased by her husband, Bill (1999); her sons, Ted (2013) and Dick (2005); as well as her parents, Laura and Hans; and her siblings, Marion Thomas, Edith Bastien, Eleanora Munro, Chris Hansen, Einer Hansen, Otto Hansen and Russell Hansen.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the wonderful staff at Sunnyview who took great care of Berta for the past three and a half years.

GERALDINE “GERRY” HELMER

Geraldine Christine “Gerry” Helmer, beloved wife and best friend of Gordon Helmer of Medicine Hat, passed away on Thursday, September 7th, 2017. Gerry also leaves to cherish her memory two children, Scott (Courtney) Helmer and their children, Max and Addison, Tanis (Richard) Ziegler and their children, Tyson, Logan, and Jayda; two sisters Carolyn Campbell, and Annette White of San Francisco, California; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father and mother, Samuel and Christine Campbell, as well as her father and mother in-law, Herman and Lydia Helmer. Gerry was born and raised in Medicine Hat. She lived in Scotland for almost two years as a young child and came back to Medicine Hat to attend school. She met the love of her life, Gordon Helmer, and they were married on December 11, 1965 in Medicine Hat. Gerry had an outgoing personality and engaging wit; she loved to talk to any and every one. She was devoted to her family and especially loved baking for her grandchildren. Gerry loved to garden and took pride in her beautiful yard. She enjoyed going for coffee with friends and loved to read a good book when she had the time. She worked for over thirty years for the Medicine Hat School District 76 as a teacher’s assistant, eventually retiring from Herald School. Gerry passed away after a very courageous battle with cancer with her family and friends by her side. The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff at St Joseph’s Carmel Hospice for their care of Gerry. Selma Schmauder of Medicine Hat passed away on Saturday, September 9, 2017, at the age of 91 years, beloved wife of the late Oskar Schmauder. She leaves to cherish her memory four children, Gerhard Schmauder of Edmonton, Hannelore Schlenker of Calgary, Harry Schmauder of Medicine Hat, and Rita Olsen of Calgary; two grandchildren, Troy Schlenker of Calgary, and Tara (Scott) Ricci of Ottawa; three great grandchildren, Cole, Anyssa and Cayden; and one sister, Alma Gehring of Stuttgart. She was predeceased by her parents, Magdalena and Jakob Stickel; her husband, Oskar Schmauder on November 14, 2003 and three brothers.
