HOWARD OSGOOD
September 1, 1925 ~ February 6, 2017

Howard Richard Osgood of Redcliff, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2017 at the age of 91 years. Howard leaves to cherish his memory two sisters, Norma Sharpe of Edmonton and Velma Pancoast of Medicine Hat; one brother, Kaye Osgood of Redcliff; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Viola Osgood; and one brother, Gordon, all of Redcliff. Howard was born and raised in Redcliff. He joined the military on February 28, 1944 and was discharged on April 27, 1946 having served in with the Royal Highland Fusiliers of Canada as a private and served overseas in WWII. Upon returning from the War, he worked in numerous places and spent the last 15 years as foreman with the CNR in Edmonton. Howard was an active member of the Redcliff Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #6 for 70 years, the Redcliff Senior Citizens and a Life Member of the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed and participated in many sports activities and he always enjoyed a good game of cards. Howard was known for his keen memory and great sense of humour. The Funeral Service will be held at CHINOOK VILLAGE, Terrace Room, 2801 – 13 Avenue SE, on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor George Brandt officiating. 1926 ~ BERTHA JANZEN ~ 2017

Bertha Emilie Janzen (nee Seeman), passed away in Medicine Hat, Alberta on Thursday, February 2nd, 2017 at the age of 90 years. Born to Adolf and Emilie (Grams) Seeman in a prairie farmhouse in Sandy Point, Alberta on February 23rd, 1926, she enjoyed the farming life with her family even while living through the Great Depression and World War II. In 1942, Bertha left home to attend the Christian Training Institute in Edmonton, Alberta. There she met a wonderful young man, Eldon Lowell Janzen of Morris, Manitoba. They planned a farming life together, until Eldon felt called to pastoral ministry. Bertha agreed to the change in plans, and they married at the Gnadenfeldt Baptist Church in Sandy Point, Alberta on July 16th, 1946. They soon after traveled to seminary in Rochester, New York and Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Bertha was a dedicated pastor’s wife and served at her husband’s side in Valleyview, Alberta; Fenwood, Saskatchewan; Arnprior, Ontario; and the Chicago and New York City areas. Four children were born to them along the way. Bertha’s life revolved around her family and her strong faith and service to the Lord. In her quiet and unassuming way she taught Sunday School, led women’s groups and mentored young mothers, played piano, and sang solos in the choir, affecting many lives along the way. Her example helped pass on a legacy of spiritual faith in Christ to her children, who are all thankful. Bertha was a homemaker until her oldest child started college. Then a notable aptitude in math landed her a bookkeeping job at Graybar Electric, where she worked until retirement. Bertha and Eldon spent several retirement years in Kelowna, British Columbia before moving to South Country Village in Medicine Hat in the 1990’s, where she very much enjoyed reconnecting with people from her youth.
Bertha loved singing and many kinds of crafting. She could sew anything from Barbie clothes to wedding dresses, and could take the simplest things and create beautiful decorations. She had little time for television or movies, she was productive.
Bertha is predeceased by her husband, parents, and brothers, Ernest (Linda) Wuerfel, Gustav (Elsie) Wuerfel, and Walter (Bertha) Wuerfel. She is survived by her loving children; Sharon (Timothy) Hawes, Dale (Coni) Janzen, Douglas (Zarah) Janzen, and Evangeline (Victor) Kovach; nine grandchildren (plus one more on the way), and six great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Bertha’s Life will be held in WUERFEL AUDITORIUM at South Country Village, 1720 Bell Street SW, on Friday, February 10th, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place at Saamis Prairie View Cemetery.
Thanks to the staff at South Country Village for many years of friendly service. Inexpressible thanks and gratitude to Wes and Renee Wuerfel for their genuine and unceasing love and care for their Aunt Bertha’s every need over many years. You both are angels from heaven. Mom, our loving hearts miss you, but we know you are with the Lord and are enjoying reunions with many loved ones. ‘Til we meet again!

SHIRLEY ANNE OSHANEK-MARKOV

Shirley Anne Oshanek-Markov passed away peacefully in Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Thursday, February 2nd, 2017. Shirley is the daughter of William Oshanek and the late Mary Oshanek (nee Chopey). She was the loving wife of Alexander (Alex) Markov; loving sister of Sharon Oshanek of Medicine Hat, Alberta; honoured to be sister-in-law to Larissa Pereira (nee Markov) and Joel Pereira of Mississauga, Ontario; proud to be aunt to Amanda, Andrew, and Julia Pereira of Mississauga, Ontario; and niece to the many uncles and aunts in the Chopey and Oshanek families and cousin to their children.

Shirley was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan and grew up in the area in the 1950’s and 60’s. She often spoke fondly of her early years on the farm of her grandparents (the late George and Anne Oshanek) and on spending time with her other grandparents (the late John and Pearl Chopey) in Springside, Saskatchewan where her grandfather was station master, and where she came to know and love trains. After graduating from Sacred Heart Academy in Yorkton, she went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Saskatchewan (Regina Campus). She was a teacher in southern Saskatchewan for several years until 1976 when she moved to Toronto to be with Alex, the love of her life.

Shirley and Alex lived in Toronto until 1981 during which time Shirley worked part time for Alex’s father, the late Dr. Bozidar Markov, as a medical office receptionist. Shirley and Alex moved to Medicine Hat in 1981 when Alex accepted a position in research and development at Defence Research Establishment Suffield and they have lived in Medicine Hat since that time. In more recent years, Shirley and Alex have spent time in North Saanich near Victoria, British Columbia where they have a second home.

Shirley was an avid supporter for the development and preservation of wildlife areas and sanctuaries and for the prevention of cruelty to animals. In the early years in Medicine Hat, she volunteered at Medicine Hat’s Police Point Park Interpretive Centre. She also had a passion for reviewing and collecting information, she was a voracious speed reader and was interested in and read everything from newspapers, to biographies, to aviation and military books and magazines, to fiction (with a particular interest in fiction with military themes). While in Medicine Hat, Shirley worked towards a second degree, a Bachelor of Education, which she obtained from the University of Regina in 1983.

Shirley and Alex shared a life-long passion for aviation. In 1991, this interest led Shirley and Alex to create Amtech Aeronautical Limited, an engineering consulting company specializing in the aeronautical, military engineering, and automation areas. In no small measure due to Shirley’s business acumen in all facets of the administrative and corporate management areas of the organization, the company has developed and maintained a skilled, experienced engineering team and a strong reputation with clients throughout Canada, the United States, and abroad. Shirley’s and Alex’s investment interests also extend to real estate with a number of property investments in the Medicine Hat and Victoria areas.

Shirley and Sharon were particularly close sisters, sharing common interests such as music and books. Shirley helped Sharon resettle to Medicine Hat in 1991. Sharon’s previous office training and experience were put to good use in the Amtech organization where the two sisters often worked on improving administrative and cost tracking processes.

Since being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2011, Shirley fought the disease tenaciously and courageously for six years choosing aggressive and, at times, experimental therapies. The family is grateful that for most of this period of time, she was in relatively good health and pain free. We are highly appreciative of the care and comfort provided by Shirley’s doctors, nurses, care givers, support services, and other staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre, the Calgary Foothills Medical Centre, the Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre, the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, and Medicine Hat Paramedic Services. We are especially grateful to Shirley’s family doctor (Dr. Filanti) of Medicine Hat, Dr. Best of the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, Dr. Foley of the Margery E. Yuill Cancer Centre, and Dr. Ghatage of Tom Baker Cancer Centre, and their associates and staff. A special thanks also goes out to the pharmacists and staff at Pharmasave in Crescent Heights, Medicine Hat.

At Shirley’s request, there will be no service at this time. A Celebration of Life will be held in one year’s time. MARIAN RAE
1918 ~ 2017

Mrs. Marian Rae, beloved wife of the late J.H. Spencer Rae, passed away at the Sunnyside Nursing Home in Medicine Hat on Monday, February 6, 2017, at the age of 98 years.

Marian Boyce was born on October 4th, 1918 in Okotoks, Alberta to Reta and William Fisher. She was the second of four (Donald, Betty, Bruce) children. Marian cultivated her love of the outdoors, literature and family in the little white house on Elma Street. Marian followed in her mothers footsteps and attended Normal School. Her first teaching position was at Fawn Hill where she taught in a one room school house kindergarten through grade 12, kept the fire stoked and the horses watered. During this time many letters were sent to the handsome red headed young man John Henry Spencer Rae, whom she married in 1939. After teaching in Gem and Duchess and following the war, Spence and Marian and baby Betty Ann (1945- 1998) settled in 1946 in Medicine Hat.

The young family was joined by Bill (1947-2013), Keith (1948) and Bruce (1950). Marian was kept busy running the 8th St NE home, as well as operating a kindergarten in the dining room to stay close to her children. Marian and Spence were part of a Crescent Heights bridge club that led to life long friendships. Her active and often mischievous family kept her on her toes, and she loved every minute of it.

Marian returned to teaching in 1957 at Alexandra Junior High School, serving as the English/Social Studies department head for 10 years. She retired in 1980 from MHHS. Her commitment to students went well beyond the classroom walls as she sponsored innumerable student activities ranging from editor of the school newspaper to coaching cheerleaders.

Upon her retirement in 1980, Marian was busier than ever. Her community activities were countless – she volunteered one day a week for over 20 years at the Medicine Hat Museum, served on the local Retired Teachers Executive, was an active member of the Medicine Hat Reader Theatre, a long time member of the Riverside Book Club, participated in the Medicine Hat Historical Society and was a volunteer producer of the Cable 10 program Prime Time. Marian treasured her many visits to Kingston, ON., and the cottage visiting Bruce (Kathy) and his family, Keith (Mary) and his family in Wolfville, NS., as well as Elder hostel adventures all over Canada with her sister Betty. She loved to spend time with Betty Ann (Bob) and her family in Calgary and Windemere. Walking in Police Point Park was a favourite activity for Marian, Bill (MaryEllen) and his family. Marian cherished her role as Gran to her 8 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren as well as that of aunt. While conducting herself with the utmost of decorum, Gran was always up for a bit of fun and was a legendary story teller. Marian was a fierce bridge player, crossword puzzle aficionado and reader. To the end, she entertained all with her lightening wit and sense of humour.

Marian was a true trailblazer and a woman ahead of her time. She leaves those that loved her a legacy of insatiable curiosity, giving back, and of quiet, determined strength.
