1918 ~ ALMA SMITH ~ 2017 Alma Matilda Smith passed away in Medicine Hat on Sunday, January 8th, 2017 at the age of 98 years. She is survived by two daughters, Vicky-Lynn (Rick) Krause and Joanne (Darrell) Hodges, both of Medicine Hat; grandchildren, Tyler (Sarai), Chad (Lizzie), Amy and Daniel; one brother, Otto Hoffman of Medicine Hat; two sisters, Martha Carlyle of Calgary and Clara (Ian) McGill of Ottawa; one sister-in-law, Helen Smith of Brooks; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends. Alma was predeceased by her parents, Mary and Theodore Hoffman; her husband, Cecil Smith; four brothers, Emil, Walter, Albert and Ernie; and two sisters, Hilda Weir and Mary Schwabe. Alma was born on May 8th, 1918 in Medicine Hat where she was raised. She attended public school and worked at Gusts Food Store, Medalta Potteries and the Royal Bank. On July 18th, 1953, she married Cecil Smith of Whitla and this city girl moved to the farm north of Whitla. Cecil and Alma were a farm family very involved in the Whitla community for 25 years. They sold the farm in 1978 and retired to Medicine Hat where Alma once again returned to be a city girl. In 1993, after Cecil’s passing, Alma moved to Horizon Village where she made many friends, and thoroughly loved being involved in all the social events. For the last four and a half years, Alma lived at the Wellington where she made more new friends and enjoyed all the activities offered to the residents. Alma was a devout life-time member of St. Peter Lutheran Church, serving in various roles and participating in the church her whole life. She was very much a people-person who enjoyed visiting with her many family and friends. The Funeral Service will be held at ST. PETER LUTHERAN CHURCH, 758 – 8th Street SE, on Friday, January 13th, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Shane Hein officiating. A private interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. 1924 ~ INEZ BAUMBACH ~ 2017 Vera “Inez†Baumbach of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Fred Baumbach, passed away on Tuesday, January 10th, 2017 at the age of 92 years. Inez leaves to cherish her memory two children, Donald (Lisa) Baumbach of Carstairs and Joan (Greg) Cote of Irvine; five grandchildren; three step grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four step great-grandchildren. 1954 ~ WAYNE BEIERBACH ~ 2016 Wayne Dale Beierbach of Chilliwack, passed away suddenly in a motor vehicle accident on Friday, December 30th, 2016 at the age of 62 years. Wayne is survived by his mother, Doreen Beierbach; daughter, Stacey (Keith) Greggains; siblings, Barry Beierbach, Rodney (Cecilia) Beierbach, Roxanne (Dave) Marr, and Rainy Deis (Kevin Petersen); three grandchildren, Ember, Nathaniel and Joshua; Aunt Pearl & Uncle Alex Palama and family, Uncle Jack Hellman and family; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Wayne was predeceased by his father, Herbert Beierbach Jr. (2005); his grandparents, Emil and Viola Darr and Herbert Beierbach Sr. and step-grandmother, Elsie Beierbach; Aunt Lily Hellman; and maternal grandmother, Marie Beierbach. Wayne was born on January 17th, 1954 in Medicine Hat to Herbert Jr. & Doreen Beierbach. He went to school in Horsham and Richmound, Saskatchewan. Wayne was raised on the family farm homestead near Richmound until 1970 when he moved to Medicine Hat. In the late 1970’s he started driving truck with Linden Transport. From that day forward, Wayne found his passion and life long career of long haul trucker, driving many miles up and down the blacktop; always speaking of beautiful scenery and many amazing friendships made along the way. If Wayne was not making miles in his truck, he was grabbing gears and riding the open road on his motorcycle. Wayne will be greatly missed by his extended family, especially his friends in Chilliwack that he had, to the west coast, east coast, Yukon and south to the USA. A Celebration of Life will be held at VICTORY LUTHERAN CHURCH, Fellowship Hall, 2793 Southview Drive SE, on Saturday, January 14th, 2017 at 12:00 until 4:00 p.m. with Reverend James Bredesen officiating. Albert, beloved husband of Therese Goulet, was called to be with his Lord and Saviour on January 7, 2017, at the age of 99 years. He was born on June 14, 1917, in Dollard, Saskatchewan and was the last survivor of his family of six: his parents Alcide and Albertine Dufresne, two brothers, Damien and Tony as well as a sister, Luciene. He and his wife Therese were happily married for almost 68 years, raising three loving children. Albert worked in a general store and post office in Lisieux, Saskatchewan from 1937 to 1942 and spent the succeeding seven years as a grain buyer and bulk fuel dealer in Dollard. In 1949, he began working at a base metal mine in Kimberley, British Columbia, then in the Dollard Hotel for a short time before leaving there in 1953 to work in the Dollard Oil Field for the Marathon Group as roustabout and pumper. From 1962 to 1967, he was a production supervisor. Much of his spare time he served as a Councillor of Dollard (seven years) and on the Shaunavon Town Council (two years). Albert was a proud member of the knights of Columbus for over 60 years. He spent many years at the Valleyview in Medicine Hat with his wife Therese and the last 9 years of his life at Columbia Assisted Living, Lethbridge, Alberta. When he turned 99, he moved to Park Meadows Village in Lethbridge. Albert is survived by his son, Gerald (Elaine) Dufresne of Calgary; grandson, Denis and great-grandson, Jochanan of Calgary; granddaughter, Rachelle (Darren deceased) Milton of Medicine Hat and great-grandchildren, Dylan and Jordan; daughter, Adele (Nick deceased) Zbrodoff of Lethbridge; granddaughter, Tracy (Kam) Bullock of Lethbridge and great-grandchildren, Brittany and Kylie; grandson, Scott Zbrodoff of Calgary;  son, Gilbert (Wendy) Dufresne of Brooks, and grandson, Jeremy of Edmonton. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Beatrice Goulet, and Armande Goulet; one brother-in-law, George Allen as well as several nieces and nephews. He was fortunate to have many close brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, 13 throughout his life. Albert liked fishing, curling, golfing and boating. He truly loved life and especially his family and friends. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle and grandfather and will be sadly missed. BUSS Elma E. Buss aged 95 years, passed away on Monday January 9, 2017 at the Havenview Care Center in Medicine Hat. Celebrating her homecoming are her only son Wayne and wife Grace and their three children, eight grandchildren and one great granddaughter: Kerry and Renae Buss: Jessilyn (Josh) Swanson, (great granddaughter, London); Brookelyn and Spencer Buss; Karen( Tim) Ehlert; Kyle and Tyler Ehlert; Cameron ( Rachel) Buss; Megan, Cayelee,and Bethany Buss. Elma was born in Aberdeen, Saskatchewan to Herman and Huldine Deimert, the third oldest in a family of thirteen children. Elma was raised in Weyburn, Saskatchewan and worked for many people which contributed to the great love of serving others. In October of 1939 , Elma married Arthur Buss and became a wife mother and widow in a short period of time. Tragedy came less than five years after their marriage when Arther was killed in action July 4, 1944, at Caen France. Her great faith in God gave her strength and courage and has carried her through the many lonely years. Elma was also predeceased by her parents Herman and Huldine Deimert and parents in-law William and Katherine Buss as well as two sisters, two brothers, a niece and nephew, as well as many other members from her husbands side of the family. Her strength and tenacity showed itself in being able to establish her own business in 1962, which later became Sew-A-Way Sewing Machines. Elma will be remembered as a woman of great faith, a bright shining light in the various capacities in her church and community. The Buss family would like to extend our gratitude to all the staff at Havenview nursing home and Dr Hirsch for their attentiveness and loving care of mother during the past months.

McLEOD William James “Bill†McLeod of Redcliff, Alberta passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 5, 2017, at the age of 94 years. He leaves to cherish his memory, three children: Hugh (Jean) of Penticton, B.C., Bob (Janine) of Medicine Hat, and Bernadette (Glen) Hubbard of Nanaimo, B.C.; nine grandchildren: Heath (Alisha), Luke (Kimberley), Darren (An), Kelli (Justin), Chelsea (Jeff), Kayla (Blair), Caitlin, Brandon, and Jamee; two great grandsons: Cameron and Bennett; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife, Sonia; his parents, Hugh and Susan; his brothers: Donald and Norman; and his sisters: Margaret Arneson and Mary Bjorgan.
The funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Holy Family Parish (1451 Strachan Rd. S. E., Medicine Hat) on Saturday, January 14, 2017, at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Philip Le celebrant. Everyone is invited to further celebrate Bill’s life at the Redcliff Legion (302 Broadway Ave. W., Redcliff) at 12:30 p.m.; there will be a family Tribute and an opportunity to say a few words. The Legion will conduct the traditional Poppy Ceremony to honour Bill’s service as a veteran. At a later date, there will be a graveside service held at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan; when Bill will be interred next to Sonia. Bill’s home was never without a furry dog friend. The last few years, he enjoyed watching the birds from his kitchen window. RUMBERG John Henry Rumberg passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2017, at the age of 77 years, beloved husband of Diane Rumberg of Medicine Hat. He also leaves to cherish his memory his brothers-in-law, Glenn (Sylvia) Snaith of Kamloops, BC and Guy Snaith of Turtle Lake, Saskatchewan; his sister-in-law, Sheila Rumberg of Medicine Hat as well as his nieces and nephews, Brian (Shelley) Rumberg and their children Taylor, Dylann and Logan; Crystal Webster and her children Maya and Reece; Sheila Street And her children Derek and Dylan; Gary Snaith and his son, Oliver; and Gordon (Kim) Snaith and their daughter Payton. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Leah Rumberg and his brothers, Brian Rumberg and Butch Rumberg. John was born on November 21, 1939 and was raised on the farm near Schuler. As a young man, he worked constructing grain elevators and feed mills and then returned to farm with his father. After his father died in 1968, John continued farming with his mother. On November 14, 1970, he and Diane were married and together they continued farming until semi-retiring to Medicine Hat in 2005. John was involved with Drowning Ford Grazing Association and enjoyed curling and playing softball and slowpitch. The funeral service will be held in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Friday, January 13, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. with Life Celebrant, David Townsend.
