1918 ~ ALMA SMITH ~ 2017 Alma Smith of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Cecil Smith, passed away on Sunday, January 8th, 2017 at the age of 98 years. 1952 ~ ALLEN LARTER ~ 2017 The family of George “Allen†Larter are deeply saddened by his sudden passing on Saturday, January 7th, 2017 at the age of 64 years. Allen leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Sherry; his daughters, Amy (fiancé, Lucas Johnson) and Ashley; his faithful dog, Boomer; his brother, John (Faye); his sisters, Mary (Lester) Fall, Audrey (Lawrence) MacDonald and Brenda (Jerry) Greensmith; his sisters-in-law, Marle (Rick) Roberts, Susan (Blair) Schlachter and Karen (Richard) Webster; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Allen was born on March 19th, 1952 in Charlottetown, PEI. In 1981 he moved to Medicine Hat, where he was employed with the City of Medicine Hat until his retirement in 2012. Allen was a gentle person, who’s constant love and devotion and friendship was endless. He was our strength and role model to what a husband, father and friend should be. ALBERT DUFRESNE 1917 – 2017
Albert, beloved husband of Therese Goulet, was called to be with his Lord and Saviour on January 7, 2017, at the age of 99 years. He was born on June 14, 1917, in Dollard, Saskatchewan and was the last survivor of his family of six: his parents Alcide and Albertine Dufresne, two brothers, Damien and Tony as well as a sister, Luciene. He and his wife Therese were happily married for almost 68 years, raising three loving children. Albert worked in a general store and post office in Lisieux, Saskatchewan from 1937 to 1942 and spent the succeeding seven years as a grain buyer and bulk fuel dealer in Dollard. In 1949, he began working at a base metal mine in Kimberley, British Columbia, then in the Dollard Hotel for a short time before leaving there in 1953 to work in the Dollard Oil Field for the Marathon Group as roustabout and pumper. From 1962 to 1967, he was a production supervisor. Much of his spare time he served as a Councillor of Dollard (seven years) and on the Shaunavon Town Council (two years). Albert was a proud member of the knights of Columbus for over 60 years. He spent many years at the Valleyview in Medicine Hat with his wife Therese and the last 9 years of his life at Columbia Assisted Living, Lethbridge, Alberta. When he turned 99, he moved to Park Meadows Village in Lethbridge. Albert is survived by his son, Gerald (Elaine) Dufresne of Calgary; grandson, Denis and great-grandson, Jochanan of Calgary; granddaughter, Rachelle (Darren deceased) Milton of Medicine Hat and great-grandchildren, Dylan and Jordan; daughter, Adele (Nick deceased) Zbrodoff of Lethbridge; granddaughter, Tracy (Kam) Bullock of Lethbridge and great-grandchildren, Brittany and Kylie; grandson, Scott Zbrodoff of Calgary;  son, Gilbert (Wendy) Dufresne of Brooks, and grandson, Jeremy of Edmonton. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Beatrice Goulet, and Armande Goulet; one brother-in-law, George Allen as well as several nieces and nephews. He was fortunate to have many close brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, 13 throughout his life. Albert liked fishing, curling, golfing and boating. He truly loved life and especially his family and friends. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle and grandfather and will be sadly missed. BAUGH George “Russell†Baugh of Lethbridge, passed away peacefully on January 7, 2017 at St. Michael’s Palliative Care Centre after a short battle with cancer at the age of 76.
Russ is survived by his partner and best friend of 24 years, Esther Larson and her daughter Maxine (Darwin) Jans and their children Monty (Gail) Jans and Charlene Jans. He is also survived by 3 children, Gary (Angela) Baugh and children Dallen, Kayla, Tambie and Lacey, Patty Ann Baugh and John Baugh and his children Jesse, Kara and Leavi; his sister Pat (Leroy) Hughson and brother John Baugh (Marcia Takacs); as well as great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Russ will always be remembered for his quick wit, helping hand and great sense of humor. He will be truly missed by all.
At Russ’ request, no service will be held. Those who wish may make donations to St. Michael’s Palliative Care Centre. The family would like to thank the staff of St. Michael’s for the care they provided Russ during his short stay.

COLASUONNO Domenico Colasuonno passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2017, at the age of 72 years, beloved husband of Linda Colasuonno of Medicine Hat. He also leaves to cherish his memory one daughter Francesca (Laurent) Maurize of Milton, Ontario; a daughter-in-law Lorette Valiquette of Grand Prairie; four grandchildren, Gabriel Maurize, Anjelica, Veronica and Julian Colasuonno; Linda’s son Lowell (Noelle) Parisian and their children Dominic and Kira J; a special person in Domenico’s life, Jason (Amy) Berry and their son Jonah; six brothers, Vito (Yollanda) of Pickering, Ontario, Cesario, Antonio (Delores), Nicola (Ester), Francesco (Maria) and Pietro (Nadine) all of Belgium; two sisters, Addolarata (Vito) Focarazzo and Lucia (Francesco) Focarrazzo as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Francesca and Guiseppe Colasuonno and one son Guiseppe. Domenico was born on September 30, 1944, in Italy and immigrated to Canada in 1965, to work in Ontario as a carpenter. He worked throughout Canada building and installing cabinets. He eventually settled in Medicine Hat. Domenico enjoyed fishing, camping, travelling and especially the companionship of his dog Moe. Those who wish to pay their respects may do so on Wednesday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Thursday from 9:30 – 10:25 a.m. Family and friends will gather for prayers in the PATTISON CHAPEL on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated in St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church (238 2nd Ave N.E.) DUGALD CAMERON 1927 – 2017
Mr. Dugald (Dug) Cameron, beloved husband of the late, Mrs. Bernice Cameron, passed away in Calgary, Alberta on Thursday, January 5, 2017, at the age of 89 years. Dug’s journey through life began with his birth on April 8, 1927 in Fairlight, Sask. He went on to graduate from the University of Saskatchewan to begin a career as a pharmacist. Along the way, he met Bernice “Barney†Tanner, and the two were married on November 25, 1954 in Moosomin. They moved to Regina, where they would spend the next 20 years raising a family. The couple then moved to Medicine Hat and made it their home for many very happy years. Dug enjoyed nature, hiking, playing cards with family and friends, and was a passionate, life-long, dyed-in-the-wool-Green fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, always with Barney at his side. They treasured countless hours over the years nature-watching while strolling the trails of Police Point Park. In his retirement, Dug enjoyed many years playing Seniors Slo-Pitch with an assortment of colourful, fun-loving teammates who became good friends. Dug had a great sense of humour and a quiet strength. He was a devoted husband and loving father, and is deeply missed by his son, Scott Cameron (Leanne Wirch) of Calgary; his daughter, Nancy (Tim) Kowalchuk of Calgary, and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives. A Graveside Service will be held at Hillside Cemetery in Medicine Hat on Wednesday, January 11, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. with Life Celebrant Gerry Getz officiating. HELFENBEIN, MARIA Maria Helfenbein, beloved wife of the late Heinrich “Henry†Helfenbein, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 6, 2017, at the age of 92 years. She leaves to cherish her memory six children, Arnold (Medina) Helfenbein, Emilie Gallant, Lydia Leadbeater (Devin), Kalinda (Jim) Clark, Henry Helfenbein (Brenda) and Ed (Kathy) Helfenbein. Mourning their grandmother are her eleven grandchildren, Sandra (Mike) Mirtle, Garrett (Laurel) Gallant, Darrin (Renee) Gallant, Chad Helfenbein (Alya), Brent Helfenbein, Ryan (Sheana) Leadbeater, Roslyn (Kyle) Horne, Kirsten Leadbeater (Cole), Shannon (Mike) Mach, Kevin Clark (Audrey) and Allison Fortier (Trevor), Robin Stewart, Kerri Stewart, and Chelsie Bosson. Maria is also survived by her 20 great grandchildren. Maria was predeceased by her parents, Helena and Jacob Subarik, her husband Henry in 1996, her daughter-in-law Helen in 2011, and one daughter in infancy. Maria was born on January 19, 1924 in Osipovichi Belarus. She married her late husband Heinrich (Henry) on November 1, 1942. After war broke out she fled to Poland where son Arnold was born and later moved to Austria where daughters Emily and Lydia were born. The family later decided to i mmigrate to Canada and ended up in Medicine Hat, Alberta, where they had three more children, Kalinda, Henry, and Edward, all born in Medicine Hat. Maria and her husband built a family home in Veinerville, Alberta where they raised their family. Maria lived in the same house until she was hospitalized in June, 2016. Maria worked at various jobs throughout her life and worked at Riverview Nursing Home after the children were all in school. She worked there for many years until she retired. She was honored with a special award from her employers and recognized by her peers as a great worker and kind, loving, and passionate person. Maria’s passions were her cooking and baking and most of all her flowers and gardens which she tended with love and care and looked forward to each spring, when she could once again bring new life to her gardens. Maria and Heinrich (Henry) were founders of the community park in Veinerville and were honored by Cypress County and the community for their efforts. A monument was placed in their name at the entrance of the park. Maria was a good Christian and a gentle pure soul who always had love and compassion for anyone she came into contact with. Maria spent many hours reading her bible and practising her faith. She never missed a birthday for anyone in her family and everyone received a card and special something from her. She was loved by everyone that she came into contact with throughout her entire life. Maria is now at her “forever home†with the Lord but she will always be remembered by her family and friends as one of the kindest, loving, and pure hearted person they will ever know. Maria’s family would like to thank the staff of 6 West at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital – you touched her life with your friendship, laughter and excellent nursing skills and compassionate care for Maria. MATTSON Margaret Mattson, passed away very peacefully with her daughter Barbara by her side on Friday, January 6, 2017, at the age of 97 years, beloved wife of the late Harold Mattson. She leaves to cherish her memory five children, Elizabeth (Ralph) Whenham and Dann (Debbie) Mattson all of Calgary, Barbara (Brian) Houff of Medicine Hat, Heather (Don) McCrady of Edmonton and Bruce (Bebe) Mattson of Vancouver; eleven grandchildren, Trent and Murray Whenham; Kurtis, Ryan and Brett Mattson, Jenna Laarman; Kimberly Roy, Amanda Houff and Darren Houff; Natasha and Joshua Mattson; fifteen great grandchildren, one sister Kay Roberts of Medicine Hat; two sisters-in-law Edna Caswell and Ruth Bohnet as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Frances and Sydney Dann. Margaret was born in Portsmouth, England on February 11, 1919, and moved to Canada when she was six months old. She grew up on a sheep ranch in the Orion/Manyberries area. Finishing school at the Convent in Medicine Hat she then took her nurses training at the Medicine Hat Hospital. After graduation, she worked for three years before marrying Harold Mattson and moving back to the family ranch. They worked together and raised five children. In 1966, they changed from sheep to cattle, retiring to Medicine Hat in 1985. She lived in Horizon Village, Chinook Village and the last seven years has lived at the Good Samaritans where she received very good care and really enjoyed the staff. Margaret was a longtime member of the Beta Sigma Phi, Orion Women’s Institute, and Orion Community Club. RUMBERG John Henry Rumberg passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2017, at the age of 77 years, beloved husband of Diane Rumberg of Medicine Hat. He also leaves to cherish his memory his brothers-in-law, Glenn (Sylvia) Snaith of Kamloops, BC and Guy Snaith of Turtle Lake, Saskatchewan; his sister-in-law, Sheila Rumberg of Medicine Hat as well as his nieces and nephews, Brian (Shelley) Rumberg and their children Taylor, Dylann and Logan; Crystal Webster and her children Maya and Reece; Sheila Street And her children Derek and Dylan; Gary Snaith and his son, Oliver; and Gordon (Kim) Snaith and their daughter Payton. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Leah Rumberg and his brothers, Brian Rumberg and Butch Rumberg. John was born on November 21, 1939 and was raised on the farm near Schuler. As a young man, he worked constructing grain elevators and feed mills and then returned to farm with his father. After his father died in 1968, John continued farming with his mother. On November 14, 1970, he and Diane were married and together they continued farming until semi-retiring to Medicine Hat in 2005. John was involved with Drowning Ford Grazing Association and enjoyed curling and playing softball and slowpitch. SHIRLEY ARNOLD 1946 – 2017
Shirley Jean Arnold was born to the family of Henry and Lilia Arnold on November 16, 1946. The Lord took her away on January 6, 2017, after a battle with cancer. Shirley was predeceased by her father, Henry Arnold on November 27, 2010 and her mother, Lilia Arnold on August 26, 2013. Shirley is survived by her sister, Beverly (Gordon) Enslen of Minsing, Ontario; brothers, Walter (Debra) Arnold of Maple Creek, Saskatchewan and Randal (Colleen) Arnold of Swift Current, Saskatchewan as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. With all their heart, family wish to thank the staff at the Alfred Egan Home, Shirley’s home for the last 35 1/2 years, where she had the greatest of care and love given to her. WEIMER Michael “Mike†Chris Weimer of Medicine Hat passed away on Monday, January 9, 2017, at the age of 86 years. He leaves to cherish his memory three children, Frances (Clarence) Schweigert, John Weimer, Ralph (Bonnie) Weimer and a son-in-law Brian Weatherall; his grandchildren and great grandchildren, Leeann; Sara and Rob (Cooper, Brendan, Addie); Clay and Sue (Hayden, Logan); Desere; John; Kyle (Zavery, Eli); Wendy (Cody, Laquisha) as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Frank and Frances Weimer; two sons, David and Randy; two daughters, Theresa, Roseanne; two brothers Tony, Ben, two sisters, Katie and Theresa.
