1924 ~ GILL ~ 2016Norman Gill of Medicine Hat, beloved husband of the late Edna Gill, passed away on Monday, November 28th, 2016 at the age of 92 years. Norman leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Arlene (Harry) Seitz; his daughter-in-law, Leslie Gill; five grandchildren, Darla (Gordon) Keeler, Noella (Juan) Melendez, Drew, Hugh and Kyle; three great grandchildren, Bailee Stewart (Andrew), Kayla Green and Zenan Green; one sister, Florence "Isabelle" Phillips; and special friend, Elsie Duke. Norman was predeceased by his wife, Edna Gill; his son, Stan Gill; his parents, Benjamen and Helen Gill; two brothers, Harry (Ida) Gill and Edwin (Dorothy Gill); and two brothers-in-law, George Phillips and Reuben Schneider.
Dad grew up in a very loving Christian home with two older brothers, Harry and Edwin and a younger sister, Isabelle. He married Edna Schneider on March 5th, 1944 and took over the family farm in the Concordia District, raising his family of one son, Stan and one daughter, Arlene.
He was an honest, hardworking man. Times were tough, but he gave his family the important things in life; values and guidance. He raised us with loving discipline and strict rules but he was wise and knew what was best for us.
Music was a big part of the family and extended to uncles, aunts and cousins. Aunt Isabelle accompanied the quartet: dad, his brothers and great uncle Emil Mayer. They sang in churches around the country. Dad was involved with different people, playing for dances, with Bill Boschee, Vic Scharff, Leslie Herman and Glen Lust. He sang in the Chinook Men’s Choir under the direction of George Weins. He also attended monthly hymn sings at Southview Church of God.
Dad loved baseball. He played with the Elkwater team and then later coached the Irvine Mercuries team which Stan was a team player.
In 1963, he sold the farm and started to build a house in Elkwater, with the help of Herb Mayer and Isaac Meier. His work ethic caught the eye of Park Manager, Andy Salus and was offered a job. He started work with the Provincial Parks in the Spring of 1964. He was committed to this job and never took a sick day. Mom and Dad became very good friends with Andy and Helen, Jeanine Varty, park secretary and motel owners, Ed and Mary Fikowski. He achieved his carpenter journeyman’s certificate.
In 1975, he became Reginal Maintenance Manager at Rimbey, Alberta. The job was very stressful, so they moved back to the house in Medicine Hat that they purchased as their retirement home before they left. Allen and Val Schattle were excellent renters for the 2 years they were gone. Dad started bussing for Dave Kusler and brought kids from Schuler to Medicine Hat High School. Then Schlenker Auction asked him to work for them. Jim was a great friend and he was a cashier alongside Diane, who became like a daughter to him. The seasonal farm auction trips were far, the days long, but he loved it. It was the people more than anything that kept him with Schlenker Auction for 18 years.
Dad became involved in 1961 with building a curling rink in Elkwater. His legacy lived on in Stan’s competitive career and later in Darla and Noella’s curling adventures. He watched all of us curl and followed along to cheer and support no matter where the competitions took them. Dad curled for years, but when his knees wouldn’t cooperate anymore, he retired. He refused to try the stick. He bowled and loved to dance, but his knees again didn’t cooperate. Mom and Dad enjoyed playing cards, Yahtzee and Aggravation (marbles) with many friends.
They sold their house and moved into a condo at Park Meadows. They lived there for 10 years and then in June 2004 moved to congregate living at Chinook Village. Mom passed away in 2008. Dad was nicely settled in Chinook Village, having his needs provided. His neighboring gals often called on him to complete the crib foursome.
Mom and Dad travelled by bus to Alaska, flew to Hawaii, attended the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, saw Disney World and Epcot Center in Florida and did a bus trip to Branson. They took Stan and Leslie, Harry and I to Las Vegas for the NFR Rodeo. Dad loved to travel and we took him on a lengthy trip to Denver, the Grand Canyon and Vegas after mom passed away.
He loved going to the ranch and helping Harry with haying for many years. He willingly gave up his license in 2013 and loved the trips to the farm to see all the bales. He still wanted to help Harry haul them and drive the big truck and trailers.
He loved going to the spa in Moose Jaw and we made many trips there with De Jong Tours. Our last trip there was just in early October and we had supper with Darrell and Sharon. They often came and visited with us all.
We also took him on a Blue Jays bus trip to Seattle along with Jerry and Jean Ziebart in 2011. Our annual Christmas present to Dad was season passes to the Medicine Hat Maverick’s games over several years but last season decided he’d sooner watch the Blue Jays from the recliner in his air-conditioned suite.
Dad was a man of integrity; his word was as good as a signed contract and his reliability was never failing. If he said he was going to do something, he did it.
Dad and the family were very fortunate to have a special lady that became a dear friend to us all. Thank you, Elsie, for all the time you shared with Dad, the A&W burgers, breakfasts and crib games. The weekly coffee days at the Co-op were special.
Dad faced many challenges with his health in the last 5 years. But through all the surgeries and cancer treatments, he always bounced back. People always commented on how well he looked and how he hasn’t changed in years. But lately he’d say “sometimes I look better than I feel.”
We want to thank Dr. Alphin, Dr. Duke and Dr. Meiring and all the nurses on 5 West and Palliative Care who were so wonderful, loving and caring. We were so blessed to have shared his life for 92 years. We prayed for little pain and suffering and God answered. He was a very special man, husband, father, grandfather and friend. We will treasure every picture and memory that we have of him.
Rest peacefully in the arms of Jesus. Love You.

1932 ~ Eskestrand-Janowsky ~ 2016 Mrs. Eva Janowsky, beloved wife of the late Keith Janowsky, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Tuesday, November 29th, 2016 at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital. She was 84 years old and suffered complications following a fractured hip. Eva leaves to cherish her memory two precious children: one son, Lyle (Debbie) Eskestrand of Medicine Hat; one daughter, Charlene (Rob) Graham of Gibsons, British Columbia; five amazing grandchildren, Koby Eskestrand, Adam Zeller, Kristen Zeller (Tyler), Danielle (Chris) Merilees and Cameron Graham; one special great granddaughter, Dylan Merilees. She was waiting to welcome twin great grandchildren in January of 2017 (Merilees twins). Eva also leaves to cherish her memory her loving siblings: one brother, Frank (Eve) Welfl of Stoney Plain; one sister, Anne (Albert) Braun of Airdrie; son-in-law, Darrell Zeller; numerous nieces and nephews; and two step-children, Dawn and Darren Janowsky of British Columbia. Every member of her family meant the world to her. Eva was predeceased by her parents, Margaret and Joseph Welfl; her brother, Nick Welfl; her sister, Mary Young (who passed away just a few weeks ago). Also predeceased by her beautiful grandson, Connor Eskestrand; and her precious daughter, Mary Zeller. Eva was born on February 25th, 1932 in Medicine Hat. She grew up on the farm in the Granlee area. She married Keith Janowsky on October 18th, 1980, created many memories for us to cherish and has resided in Medicine Hat until her passing. She enjoyed company, cooking, baking, gardening, dancing, music and spending time with family, friends and grandchildren. Eva loved hockey (especially the Calgary Flames), enjoyed curling and attended all sporting events to cheer on her grandchildren. She also enjoyed travelling and entertaining for many different occasions. One of her favorite activities was her Sunday morning breakfast with her niece, Carole Werre. Her loving heart, wisdom and sense of humor will live on forever. Special thanks to Dr. Doug Mastel, all physicians and staff of 5 West, 2 North and Palliative Care. Dorothy Anne Bien of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Anton "Tony" Bien, passed away on Monday, November 28th, 2016 at the age of 83 years. Dorothy touched so many lives with her warm smile, kind heart, and helping hands. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Michelle Bien and Bruce Bien, both of Medicine Hat; four grandchildren, Cassia Eichelbaum, Kara Broste (Cal Drader), both of Medicine Hat, Erik Broste of Nelson, British Columbia and Curtis Bien of Red Deer; four great grandchildren, Kalia, Gaetana and Anton Eichelbaum and Bella Bien; one sister, Rosemary (Gary) Woods; one sister-in-law Rose Bien and one brother-in-law Bill Bien as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Tony Bien; her parents, James and Mary Starr; and dear friend and companion, Paul Hannah. Dorothy was born on September 13th, 1933 in Vanguard, Saskatchewan where she started her schooling. She then moved to Vancouver and Toronto for 11 years. Dorothy returned to Vanguard where she met and married Tony Bien on October 2nd, 1952. Together they lived and worked on the family farm until 1994, when they retired to Gravelbourg, Saskatchewan. After Tony's passing on March 20th, 2000, Dorothy moved to Medicine Hat to be closer to her family. She was a member of Holy Family Parish and a 60 year member of the C.W.L. Dorothy loved following all sports, and was a dedicated fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders. She made friends wherever she went! But most of all, Dorothy loved being with her extended family. Dorothy will be missed dearly and forever cherished by all those who knew and loved her. DOWNEY With his family by his side, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Donald “Don” Paul Downey on Monday, November 28, 2016, at the age of 61 years, beloved husband of Gerri Downey of Medicine Hat and loving father of Mike Downey (Alyssa Bennett) and Jarret (Amber) Downey; three grandchildren, Colton and Jaida Downey and their mother Kristen Downey; Alyssa’s son Cameron Getz; his mother Shirley Downey of Medicine Hat; Gerri’s brother, Kelvin (Sandi) North; his niece and nephews, Chris (Kerri), Leanne (Chad) and their daughter, Ashlynn, Devin (Lyndia) and their children Skyler and Ethan, and Dustin as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his father Paul Downey and his sister and brother-in-law Linda and Glen Schneider.
Don was born on December 3, 1954 in Medicine Hat, Alberta and after graduating from McCoy High School he stayed in Medicine Hat. Don married the love of his life Gerri North on June 10, 1978, they spent their married life in Medicine Hat. Through his work at Advance Distributors, Group One Realty, Final Touch Interiors and Creative Floor Coverings he knew many people. He was so personable with anyone and everyone, he was thought of as a great guy, and well respected by many. He was involved with creating the Medicine Hat Floor Covering Association Golf tournament and ran that for many years. He was a Medicine Hat Hockey Hound and was also involved in running the AAA Bantam Hockey tournament. He liked playing many team sports; hockey, baseball, golfing, bowling, curling, and dragonboating. His love for sports had him coaching for Minor Hockey, soccer, and baseball.
We have a great loss, he will be dearly missed by all who knew him. His zest for life, his friendship and keen sense of humour will never be forgotten. He had a positive outlook that was inspiring.
A celebration of Don’s life will take place at Holy Family Parish (1451 Strachan Road SE) on Friday, December 2, 2016. Family tribute and slideshow will begin at 10:30 a.m. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Philip Le Celebrant. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery. EBERHARDT Monika Loretta Eberhardt of Medicine Hat, passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2016, at the age of 57 years. Monika was born and raised in Medicine Hat. She brought so much grace and joy to so many in her 57 years; always offering a smile or compliment to all who were fortunate to spend time with her. A serious brain injury at age 3 left Monika with a life of challenges, ending with a two year battle against cancer. Through all her years she never complained or added difficulty, but instead was forever grateful to those who helped and provided care. Growing up, Monika enjoyed her time between Redi Enterprises, Brownies, Girl Guides and annual camping trips to Christina Lake, where she was a tremendous asset to the local beach volleyball team. Monika had a lifelong love for 5 pin and 10 pin bowling and astounded all with her talent to earn near perfect games. Thank you Pat (Special Olympics) for your support and encouragement over the years. Monika’s greatest love was for her Medicine Hat Tigers, and has followed them throughout all their seasons. One of the greatest highlights in her life was the honour of dropping the ceremonial puck at this years Tiger’s Cancer Awareness Night, October 22, 2016. The Tiger’s, who spent time on and off the ice with her, gave her a priceless gift that she continued to speak of into her final days. Monika was also so blessed to be employed by the wonderful people at Brewmaster. The staff there gave her so much love and encouragement over many years and made her feel so important and appreciated. Monika’s passing will leave a void in the hearts of her surviving parents, Albert and Stefanie Eberhardt, her sister, Angela (Keith Schneider), nephew Devon; sister Caroline (Ralph Havinga) and their children Devon, Myles (Nicole); numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, as well as two special friends Carol and Christine. She was predeceased by her grandparents Otto and Hulda Eberhardt in Medicine Hat and Stefan and Rosa Szinicz in Austria. Her family are eternally grateful to Dr. Raissouni, Nurse Lori and all the incredible supportive staff at the Margery Yuill Cancer Clinic, Dr. Prince, Dr. Monte, Dr. Foley and the wonderful compassionate nurses (particularly Kendra and Shirley, Jamie and Nancy) on the Palliative Care Unit. We are also very grateful to Lindy, Meagan and Natasha, who were always concerned with her daily needs and well being. You all have made such a difficult journey so much easier. Mrs. Fay Wood, beloved wife of Mr. Chip Wood of Redcliff, passed away at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Sunday, November 27, 2016, at the age of 61 years. Besides Chip, also left to cherish Fay’s memory are her mother, Mary Bierbach and her sister, Kathy (Mike) Mitchell. Fay was well known for her volunteering throughout the town of Redcliff. She loved her flower beds and making crafts. She will be remembered for her contagious smile and big heart. FRISCH Victor Frisch of Medicine Hat, passed away on Sunday, November 27, 2016, at the age of 91 years, beloved husband of the late Alice Frisch. He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Paulette McClelland (Rodger McKinnon) and Donna (Ken) McLay; four grandchildren, Brent (Joanie) McLay and their children Emma and Cameron; Lindsay (Jeff) Belitski and their children Kolbi, Karmyn and Kabri; Michael (Tanis) McLay and their children Harper and Avery; Tracy McClelland; and one sister-in-law, Bette Frisch. He was predeceased by his parents Emma and John Frisch; his wife, Alice on May 26, 2013 and by two brothers, Edwin in infancy and Herb. Victor was born on October 29, 1925 in Medicine Hat. He met and married his only love in life Alice in 1947. He worked at various places including the coal mine, pottery and glass factory. In 1949, they moved to Oyen to start their life of farming which was his pride and joy. He was a hard worker with a good work ethic and was extremely meticulous with all of his machinery. Mom and Dad were inseparable, Mom being his hired man. For 20 years, they drove back and forth from Medicine Hat to Oyen. In 1995, he reluctantly sold the farm and permanently moved to Medicine Hat. In his younger years, he enjoyed curling, baseball and bird hunting. His passion for playing pool inspired him to buy the pool hall in Oyen. Due to his stroke in 2011, his passion for playing pool diminished but he still enjoyed going to the A&W and playing cards at the casino every Friday night which he did until two weeks before his passing. Together, Mom and Dad enjoyed many fishing trips with friends. KATHERINE (KAY) MARSHALL October 14, 1919 ~ November 25, 2016 Katherine (Kay) Marshall passed away on Friday, November 25, 2016, at the age of 97 years of age, beloved wife of the late, Jacob Marshall. Kay’s memory will be treasured in the hearts of her children; Judy (Don) Skappak and their children, Nicole (Cory McKenzie), Laurie (Dean LaGrange), Trevor Skappak (Sandra); Virginia (Ron) Barnes and her children, Bart (Sheryl) Haahr, Shannon (Cory Cadrain), Jodi (Colin Romanow); Cynthia (Martin) Kaspers and their children, Danelle and Marty (Briana) Kaspers; Randy (Esther) Marshall and their children, Vaughn (Alecia) Marshall, Curtis Marshall, and Marci Marshall; Tim Marshall and children, Landon, Kassidy, Julia and their mother Danita Marshall. Her legacy will live on in her twenty-one great grand children, as well as her sisters-in-law, Katherine Marshall and Barbara Marshall, and several nieces and nephews. Kay was predeceased by her parents, George and Barbara Marsall; her husband, Jake in 2003; nine siblings, George, Christ, Rose, Matt, Frank, Joe, Mike, Barbara, Clem and son-in-law, Jerry Haahr. Kay was born and raised on the farm near Mendham, SK., and moved to Acadia Valley, Alberta in 1943 when she married Jake. This remained her happy home for sixty years where she stayed busy raising her family, being very involved with St. Mary's Catholic Church, the C.W.L., the Community Club and the Sunset Club. Kay worked as the school custodian for 15 years before retiring in 1986. Although her house was small, the number of people that Kay hosted for family events was incredible. She loved sports whether participating herself, watching her kids or watching it on TV (especially the Blue Jays and curling). In 2003, Kay moved to the Oyen Lodge which she really enjoyed before moving into the Cypress View Lodge in Medicine Hat, in 2007. She continued her social lifestyle of playing cards, attending the evening music events and especially enjoying visits from her family. Over the years, Kay made many friends and they, like all of her family, will miss her dearly. We will always remember Mom with love, for her style, loving demeanor, forgiving attitude and devotion to her family.
