MOGCK

Emma Mogck of Medicine Hat, passed away on Thursday, August 25, 2016, at the age of 96 years, beloved wife of the late Ralph Mogck. She leaves to cherish her memory three daughters, Sheila (Ken) Greenstein, Donna (Gordon) Demke and Diane (David) Symington; six grandchildren, Doris (Doug) and their children Stefanie, Bradley (Courtney) and their daughter Delta; Michael (Karen) and their children Brayden and Caitlin; Tamra (Justin) and their children Ayden and Arie; Alysson; Jennifer (Jason) and their children Aura and Nikolai; and Christina; one brother Daniel Enslen, one sister Alice (Herb) Sackman as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Maria and George Enslen, her husband Ralph on August 26, 1998; one granddaughter Rebecca; four brothers, Jack, John, William and Leo; three sisters, Anna Jauck, Leah Stringer and Tillie Anderst. Emma was born on January 17,1920 on the family homestead at Surprise Saskatchewan, the seventh of ten children to George and Maria Enslen who immigrated to Canada from Russia in the early 1900's. On the Enslen family farm, with ten children, there was lots of cooking, baking, washing, and ironing to be done. She helped with all these chores and her mother taught her to knit at an early age. By the time she was 16 she could bake bread on her own. She married Ralph Mogck on January 10,1941 and together they farmed and ranched in the Grayburn district south of Walsh. Emma worked tirelessly beside Ralph, milking cows, tending chickens and other farm chores but could also bake pies and kuchen with equal competence (and delightful consequences!). In 1971, Emma and Ralph semi-retired to Medicine Hat where Emma worked as a seamstress in a drapery shop and also as a sales clerk for Sears in their drapery department. Emma enjoyed various forms of sewing and quilting as a hobby. When her family was growing up she sewed many of their clothes and it was not unusual for the girls to be seen well turned out in matching dresses. There were graduation gowns and bridesmaid dresses made from her hand also. Emma and Ralph loved to travel, they had many adventures in far away places like Europe, South East Asia, the Middle East, South America and closer to home; all the provinces and many states as well. Several of these trips were in support of Missions. She shared Ralph’s interest in politics and along with him was active in the Gideon’s International organization. Social activities were always centered around the church and family. She was an active and faithful member of Hillcrest church and more recently at South Country Village chapel where just last week she still managed to sing the hymns by memory albeit with a frail voice. Emma’s personality can be characterized by her strong faith, her perseverance through the challenges of life, and her focus on family. Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Thursday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Friday from 12 noon – 12:55 p.m. The funeral service will be held in Hillcrest Evangelical Missionary Church (3785 13th Ave SE) on Friday, September 2, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Robert Findley, Rev. Larry Enslen and Pastor Mark Bolender officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillside Cemetery. She was predeceased by her husband Clifford in 2004; one daughter Evangelyn; three brothers, James, Glen and Johnny; two brothers-in-law, Raymond Wakefield and Arnold Zakariasen; and three sisters-in-law, Clara, Ruth and Shirley.
Katherine (Kay) was born in Medicine Hat on March 17, 1918, the second of six children of John and Rosine Salberg. She started school in the one-room Conquerville School, and later attended Lehi and Farmhill Schools in the Magrath area. Kay married Clifford Solberg on October 17, 1936 and lived and farmed southeast of Bow Island until 1981 when Clifford retired from farming and they moved to Bow Island. She loved to garden (both on the farm and in town) and preserve the 'fruits of her labor' – she made the best apple pies with flakiest pie crusts ever! Other hobbies included crocheting, reading about history and pioneer life, and reading and writing poetry. After Clifford passed away in 2004, Kay continued to live in their home until 2010 when she moved into Pleasantview Lodge and later to the Long-term Care wing of the Bow Island Hospital. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother – you should have seen her face light up when the grandkids and great-grandkids came to see her! Her indomitable spirit and wonderful sense of humour will be missed by all who knew her.
