1918 ~ MAYER ~ 2015 Alice Edith Mayer of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Herbert Mayer, passed away on Monday, September 28th, 2015 at the age of 97 years. 1928 ~ EBEL ~ 2015 Leona Luella Ebel, beloved wife of David "Dave" Ebel of Medicine Hat, passed away on Monday, September 28th, 2015 at the age of 87 years. Leona leaves to cherish her memory her three sons, Neil (Nance), Gordon (Michele) and Rick (Joanne); one daughter, Dawn (Mike) Pearce; five grandchildren, Christopher, Dana (Ili), Jonathan, Nicholas and Luella; one brother, Otto Fandrich; one brother-in-law, Elmer (Anne) Ebel; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Leona was predeceased by her parents, Gustav and Magdelena Fandrich; and four brothers, Edward Fandrich, Victor Fandrich, Raymond Fandrich and Irvine Schneider. Leona was born on August 8th, 1928 in Hilda, Alberta and married David on June 7th, 1950. 1940 ~ ANDERSON ~ 2015 Alwyn Anderson of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Floyd Anderson, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 25th, 2015 at the age of 75 years.
Alwyn was born and raised on a farm in Great Harwood, Lancashire, England. A wise woman, she was trained as a midwife and nurse and became a Registered Nurse in 1961. In 1966 she moved to Edmonton to marry Floyd on December 29th. After brief periods in Calgary and Suffield, they settled in Medicine Hat in 1973.
She began work as a nurse at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital in 1972 and became the Chief Stork in 1977 (Head Nurse and subsequently Manager of Labour and Delivery), a position she held until her retirement in 2000. She was a well respected nurse with a sense of humour who was well known for her wands, hats and ability to accurately predict the weight, sex and date of birth of babies. Alwyn was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992 and has since worked as an advocate, activist and supporter for other women coping with cancer locally, nationally and internationally. She was involved in the Canadian Breast Cancer Network, the Breast Cancer Survivors’ Network and the local group Life After Breast Cancer.
Always active, Alwyn was an avid hiker in her youth through to her involvement with the Tough Old Birds (TOBs), a hiking group for women over 50. She enjoyed walking, biking and she participated as a member of a local Dragonboat team and also paddled on a team composed entirely of breast cancer survivors. She practiced Tai Chi for decades and enjoyed tea and banter with her close Tai Chi friends on Saturdays. Alwyn was active in Toastmasters, and particularly enjoyed composing humorous speeches. More recently she was involved with PEO (Philanthropic Educational Organization), a group focused on advancing education for women. She loved a good cup of tea and had many varieties of tea close at hand. Alwyn also loved good food and enjoyed cooking different cuisines. A creative and fun granny, she loved dressing up and playing with her grandchildren. She was a strong, kind, generous, compassionate woman who was inclusive of everyone and was a mentor to many.
Alwyn leaves to cherish her memory her sons, Patrick (Amelia Correia) and their two children, Sophia and Lucas, and Scott; her sisters, Marie Wilson and Joan Simpson in the UK, Cynthia (Ian) Millar in the USA; her brothers, Hedley (Alice) Pickard, Duncan (Barbara) Pickard, and John (Peggy) Pickard, all in the UK; her close niece, Helen Simpson; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Alwyn was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Elsie; her sister, Glenys (Raymond) Clough; her brother, Gordon Pickard; and her brothers-in-law, Arthur Wilson and James Simpson.
The Funeral Service will be held at ST. JOHN'S PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 504 – 2nd Street SE, on Friday, October 2nd, 2015 at 1:30 p.m. with Reverend Dr. Nancy Cocks officiating. 1949 ~ LUNN ~ 2015 Paulette Lunn of Medicine Hat, passed away on Saturday, September 26th, 2015 at the age of 66 years. KRAUSE Alma Krause (nee Werner) passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2015, at the age of 78 years, beloved wife of Hugo Krause of Medicine Hat. Alma leaves to cherish her memory five children, Susan Krause (Ron Mastel), Harvey (Carmen) Krause, Marian (Brent) Woods, Ken Krause and Gary Krause; five grandchildren, Makenzie, Chelsey, Jenna, Brendan and Donovan; two sisters, Eleonore Tessmann and Elfriede (Hans) Börger; sisters-in-law Annie Werner, Irmgaard Liedtke, Lillian Krause, Vera Krause, and Anne Telke, brother-in-law Jake Krause (Jeanette) as well as numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends in Canada, USA, and Germany. She was predeceased by her parents Robert and Augusta Werner; four brothers, Erich, Adolph, Reinhard and Helmut; two sisters, Ida (twin) in infancy and Melitta, nephew Günther Liedtke, sister-in-law Annie Werner (Germany), brothers-in-law Adolph Tessmann and Oswald Krause.
Alma was born December 25, 1936 in Altwitten, Westpreußen. In 1945 the family fled to Scheeßel, West Germany where Alma had all her schooling. In 1952 Alma started her working career as a housekeeper. In 1956 at the age of 19 she immigrated to Canada to join her sister Ella and brother Adolph. Alma worked at various jobs becoming fluent in English. Her last position was at the Baptist Haven of Rest as head cook. She married Hugo Krause on May 31, 1958 and they settled on the family farm outside of Medicine Hat. In 1964 the family moved to Bow City then in 1967 to Rolling Hills where they farmed for the next 30 years. After a few years at Seven Persons, Alma and Hugo retired to Medicine Hat in 2002.
Alma loved reading, writing and storytelling. She was very proud of her poems and short stories published through the writing club and various newspapers. Alma was also a passionate knitter. Her teddy bears, baby toques, scarves and mittens were her joy to create and give to all. She loved attending church, singing and quilting with the ladies club. Alma also enjoyed gardening and flowers, baking, watching game shows, and playing the lottery now and then.
Alma's grandchildren were her pride and joy. She loved spending time with them as often as she could, playing games and cards, cheering them on at their various activities and celebrating their accomplishments with them. She never forgot a birthday, be it family or friend. Her loyal, hardworking, generous and friendly spirit was and will always be an inspiration to us all.
Alma will be dearly missed by all whose lives she touched.
Family and friends who wish to pay their respects may do so at the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME on Thursday evening from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Friday for one hour prior to the service. ROY (RED) REGINALD FREDERICK NEWNHAM
November 7th, 1924 – September 26th, 2015 Longtime Redcliff resident, Red Newnham, passed away peacefully at Carmel Hospice on Saturday morning, in the company of his loving friends, Garry and Hazel Willis. Red was predeceased by his parents, Charlie and Olive Newnham; brother, Ken; brothers and sisters-in-law, Gordon (Myrtle) and Ed (Huei Mei); and his companion of over 50 years, Rose Keats. He will be deeply missed by his niece, Janice (Jay) Carton of Red Deer; nephew, Ken (Betty) Newnham of Winnipeg and their sons Tom and Ben; and Godson, Garry (Hazel) Willis of Redcliff.
Red lived his entire life in the modest Redcliff home in which he was born and raised, the only notable exception being his time away for wartime service. He enlisted in the RCAF soon after turning 18 and by age 19 was flying operationally over occupied Europe as tail gunner on a Halifax bomber with 427 (Lion) Squadron, based in Leeming, Yorkshire. Red had a deep affection for the Halifax, in particular his crew's aircraft Q for Queenie. He often commented that Queenie never failed to bring him home safely from places he didn't really want to go to in the first place. He thought it quite unfair that the Lancaster grabbed all the glory, while the Halifax did most of the hard work.
Upon completing his tour of 30 operational missions, Red returned to Canada on leave and was demobilized here when hostilities ceased. He initially found work in the Redcliff Glass Factory, then joined the staff at the Suffield Experimental Station in 1950, working there until his retirement in 1985. Red was a staunch supporter and Past President, Past Officer, 1st Vice President, Executive Committee, and Sergeant-At-Arms of the Redcliff Royal Canadian Legion Branch #6, and a faithful member of the congregation of St. Ambrose Anglican Church.
Family and friends were everything to Red, and he had plenty of the latter. A true gentleman, thoughtful and considerate, he was a wonderful storyteller and an even more skillful flirt. His ready smile, quick wit and dry sense of humour will be remembered and cherished by all who knew him.
Red's funeral service will be held at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, #1 Dunmore Road SE, at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 2nd, 2015, officiated by Dr. David Carter. Interment will follow in the Family Plot in Redcliff Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Red's memory may be made to the Redcliff Royal Canadian Legion Branch #6, 302 Broadway Avenue East, Redcliff, Alberta, T0J 2P0, or to the Carmel Hospice at St Joseph's Home, 156 – 3rd Street NE, Medicine Hat, Alberta, T1A 5M1, or to the charity of your choice.
At this time, the family extends their heartfelt thanks to Garry and Hazel Willis for the truly remarkable friendship and care they extended to Red over many years. Our thanks as well to the nurses and staff of Medicine Hat Home Care, The Palliative Nurses, and the staff at Carmel Hospice for their thoughtfulness and compassion during Red's brief time with them. He could not have been in better hands. I will travel empty-handed.

THOMPSON Bill was born on August 3, 1942 to George and Leona Thompson of Bow Island and entered into the loving arms of his Savior on September 24, 2015. Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years – Carol (Sweet). He also leaves to cherish his memory three children Carla (Shawn Jackson) of Vancouver, Aaron (Terry) of Kelowna, Willy (Tania) of Chestermere; six grandchildren Dan Vander Heiden, Sara (Jesse) Andreas, Dakota Thompson, Shelby Thompson, Kacy Thompson and Jared Thompson and one great grandson Cole Andreas; one brother Don Thompson and sisters Doris Bolig, Cindy Pearson and Sue (Mike) Williams as well as numerous bothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
