1920 ~ WALKER ~ 2015

Mary Martine Walker of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Erwin “Elvin” Walker, passed away on Tuesday, March 24th, 2015 at the age of 94 years. Mary leaves to cherish her memory her three daughters, Carol (Peter) Davick of Wetaskiwin, Diane (Gary) Weiss of Medicine Hat, and June (Ivan) Schick of Elkwater; ten grandchildren; twenty two great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Vern (Sue) Andersen of Calgary; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her husband, Elvin; her parents, Jim and Marianne Andersen; one brother, Ron (Mary) Andersen; her in-laws, Ralph (Martha) Walker, Ed (Martha) Walker, Martha (Charles) Angle, Frieda (Andrew) Stickel and Esther (Ben) Sulz. Mary was born on July 21st, 1920 in Thisted per Arden, Denmark. She immigrated to Canada in 1928 with her family and settled at Sceptre, Saskatchewan. Mary attended and graduated from St. Angela’s at Prelate, Saskatchewan, she then attended normal school in Calgary and graduated with a teaching certificate. Mary taught at Ehman School, Maple Tree School and lastly Echodale School northwest of Hilda in 1943-1948 and she was a substitute teacher at Hilda for many years. She met Elvin while she was teaching in the Hilda district in 1945 and they were married on July 3rd, 1947 in Medicine Hat. They made their home on the family homestead northwest of Hilda until retirement to Medicine Hat in December of 1996. Mary was an avid reader, gardener, cook and baker, loved music and the company of family and friends. She will missed by all those who knew and loved her. The Funeral Service will be held at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, on Monday, March 30th, 2015 at 11:00 p.m. with Pastor Bob Findley officiating. Harvey Dirk passed away peacefully at Medicine Hat Regional Hospital with his family by his side on Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at the age of 68 years, beloved husband of Gail Dirk of Medicine Hat. HARRY WALTER ROSE

July 25, 1928 ~ March 24, 2015

Walter Rose, loving and devoted husband of Blanche (Ramm) for 62 years, passed away peacefully at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Tuesday, March 24, 2015 at the age of 86. Along with Blanche he leaves to cherish his memory his four children; Norton (Simone) Rose, Clare (Kathy) Rose, Vaughn (Camille) Rose and Lindsy (Ralph) Bonogofski; seven grandchildren; Schaun (Tracy) Rose, Wade Rose, Kaila Fischer, Shane Rose, Shyloh-Dawn Bonogofski, Josh Bonogofski and Chad (Chaylene) Demontigny; seven great-grandchildren; mother-in-law, Alice Ramm of Lumby, B.C., and many nieces and nephews. Walter was predeceased by his parents, Reginald (Rex) and Dorothy (Ellis) Rose; sisters, Nona Smith, Francis Needham, Helen Woolfe and Gene Gardner; brothers, Arthur, Reginald and Richard. Walter was born in Redcliff where he spent his early years. From there his family moved to their farm which was located between Redcliff and Medicine Hat. When Walter was 15, the family moved to Medicine Hat where he attended St. Teresa’s Academy and Alexandra High School. Following high school, Walter worked in the oil field, restaurant business and at the Ralston Experimental Station, attending to the animals while helping his dad on the farm. In 1953, he married Blanche Ramm. He left his job in Ralston and returned to work the farm when his father passed away. Several years later Walter and Blanche moved to Medicine Hat where they raised their family. Walter and his family were faithful members of Memorial Salem United Church. As a member of the Board of Stewards, and many of those years as Board Chairman and Trustee, Walter spent countless hours working hard to keep the church in operation until the amalgamation with Fifth Avenue United Church. He continued to be involved with the Church and, along with Blanche, helped to convene many of the traditional turkey dinners. He spent countless hours seeking donations and selling tickets. Walter was extremely proud of the accomplishments of his children and their families. Walter took great pride and delight in the Rose family tradition of Saturday night hamburgers at “Grandma and Grandpa’s”. Because of this, he is affectionately referred to as ‘Grandpa Hamburger’ by some of his great-grandchildren. We will all miss his quick wit and sense of humor. Special thanks is extended to the doctors and nurses in the Palliative Care Unit. JOHANNES VAN DAM

September 27, 1934 ~ March 25, 2015

John Van Dam passed away at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at the age of 80 years. John lived the first eighteen years of his life in Monster, Holland, graduating High School there. He immigrated to Canada in 1951, with his parents and seven siblings on the Castle Bianco. The family settled in Picture Butte, Alberta, where they lived in a 1 room shack in the middle of a farmer’s field; then Taber and in 1953, Redcliff. All of the oldest boys, including John, took on jobs working in the sugar beet fields to help support the family. In Redcliff, John went to work for Dominion Glass and built a hobby greenhouse to grow vegetables. He eventually partnered with his older brother and built a large commercial greenhouse in Redcliff. They became founding members of the Red Hat Co-op. In 1968, he purchased Riverview Greenhouses in Medicine Hat and continued to operate the business until his retirement in 1992. His favorite hobby was raising great-danes and he often had them accompany him on his hikes in the Cypress Hills and beyond. Over his life, John raised over 10 danes. His other hobbies included painting and growing a market garden. John was involved for many years in musical theatre and he was a lifelong Barbershop singer, both in Medicine Hat and Florida where he delighted in spending all of his winters. In the last few years of his life, John worked towards realizing his dream of a butterfly house in Alberta. The Butterfly House in the Windmill Greenhouse opened in 2012. John was predeceased by his parents as well as two brothers, John and Adrian. He is survived by 4 brothers, Jim (Helen), Bill (Winnie), Alfred (Norma) and Art; one sister, Joanne (Ralph) as well as many nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law, Olga and Kathleen. A Celebration of John’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. with Life Celebrant Gerry Getz officiating. A time of fellowship will follow immediately thereafter in the Cook Southland Reception Facility. June was predeceased by her parents Edouard (1927) and Agnes (1998) Maillard, sister Lily/Sis (2008) Buchholz, husband John (1991) and son Rickee (2009). Remembering June with love are her sister Laura (Joe McFadzen), Medicine Hat, sons Wayne (Kaisa), St. Pete’s Beach, Florida, John (Irene), Chemainus, BC and daughter-in-law Loraine, Penticton, BC, six grandchildren – David Dutton Fraser, Kathryn Fraser of Edmonton, Saara Dutton, New York, David (Diane) Dutton, Vancouver, Graham Dutton, Edmonton and Jason (Damariz) Dutton, Surrey, BC. five great-grandchildren Tait, Jaycee, Reid, Lucas and Tané. June is also remembered by nieces Donna, Janice, Jeanette and their families as well as her extended family. June was truly a leader and instructor, whether at the Redcliff pool or Seniors’ Centre or the craft table at Swan Valley, she was very active and involved in the communities in which she lived. June was named Citizen of the Year in 1988, in recognition of her contributions to the town of Redcliff, and she was very proud of this honour. A bench in June’s memory has been placed in the Redcliff Cemetery. Interment in Redcliff Cemetery will take place this summer.

MERLYN ‘BUD’ MATTSON

Mr. Merlyn (Bud) Mattson, beloved husband of Mrs. Clara Mattson, passed away at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Monday, March 23, 2015, at the age of 83 years. Bud will be remembered by his loving wife, Clara; seven children: Lawrence (Sue) Mattson, Garry (Karla) Mattson, Carl (Bonnie) Mattson, Keith (Shelley) Mattson, Brian (Sheila) Mattson, Brenda (Robert) Burton and Glenn (Connie) Mattson; 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild awaiting birth. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Mabel Mattson and a brother in infancy, Chaz. Bud was born October 1, 1931 in Paddockwood, Saskatchewan. Living in a rural setting with his family, he also attended school in the country. On November 3, 1953, he married Clara Maffenbeier and they were blessed with 7 children. As a young man, a strong work ethic was instilled in him as he began working making deliveries from the train to various businesses in Val Marie. Working became his passion and not only was he a “Jack of all trades”, he was good at whatever he tried his hand at. He was mechanically inclined and knew his way around a shop. A Graveside Service will be held at Hillside Cemetery on Monday, March 30, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. For those wishing to attend, we ask that you join the Funeral Procession which will depart from Cook Southland Funeral Chapel at 1:50 p.m. Light refreshments will be served in the Cook Southland Reception Facility immediately following.
