.LEONA GRONEMEYER
September 14, 1943 ~ April 12, 2014

We love you more than anything
We’ve loved you to the end.
You were our mother first
And then our dearest friend.

(Helen) Leona Gronemeyer (nee Dyck), beloved mother of Shanda (Ken) Hunt of Calgary and Diana (Ernest) Baedke of Medicine Hat, passed away on April 12, 2014 at the age of 70 years. Leona leaves to cherish her memory four grandchildren; Jessica Baedke, Sydney Baedke, Joshua Baedke, and Kenny Hunt; two sisters, Loretta Romaniuk and Diana (Duncan) Fisk, four sisters-in-law, Lorraine Dyck, Karla Holgate, Ella Jauerneck, and Gisela Kochan; four brothers-in-law, Hans (Louise) Kochan, Peter (Ruth) Gronemeyer, Willie Gronemeyer, and Karl (Laura) Gronemeyer and very special friends, Bob and Anne Rushford, Les and Bev Wygiera, and Bev Jans. Leona was predeceased by her husband, Werner, in December, 2013, parents, Henry and Katherine Dyck, one brother, Ed Dyck, parents-in-law, Willie and Ella Gronemeyer, two brothers-in law, Herman Kochan and Arnold Jauerneck, and one nephew, Bernny Klosner. Leona was born on September 14, 1943 in Coaldale, AB and grew up on the family farm south of Grassy Lake, graduating from Chamberlain High School in 1960. In the fall of 1960, she moved to Lethbridge and attended Lethbridge Junior College, earning a Business Education Certificate. In December, 1961, Leona met Werner when he tripped her at a skating rink, after which he always enjoyed telling people that she fell hard for him. Leona worked for the Unemployment Insurance Commission from 1961 – 1964, during which time she and Werner were married on June 9, 1962. Leona left her job to start their family, welcoming Shanda in July, 1964, and Diana Lee in October, 1966. The family moved from Lethbridge to Medicine Hat in October, 1971 when Werner was transferred with the CPR. Leona returned to work at DomGlas in inventory control in 1977, where she worked diligently until the factory closed in 1989. At this time, Leona’s days were filled by faithfully looking after her parents as their health failed. She then returned to work in 1991, first as a desk clerk at the Imperial Inn, and then in 2002 as a dietary aide at Good Samaritans. Leona became wonderful friends with her coworkers and truly loved “her old people”, for whom she cared for 10 years until ill health forced her to resign. Leona loved working in her flower beds, cooking, baking, and doing jigsaw and crossword puzzles, but most of all, she loved her family. Leona spent her entire life caring for others – first her children, then parents, and finally Werner, after he suffered a life-altering head injury in 1995. The happiest times of her life were spent holding the little grandbabies and never putting them down. Leona faithfully attended every possible event that her grandchildren were in, including school awards days and events and especially the Rotary Music Festival. She was so proud of each accomplishment and performance. Leona’s health began to fail in 2011 and in May of 2012, a diagnosis was made of extremely rare neuroendocrine cancer. Only approximately 3 people in 100,000 are affected by this cancer and of those, 50% will have carcinoid syndrome. Of those, 50% will have carcinoid heart disease. Leona suffered from all 3, which will affect about 3 in 1,000,000 people. It is not surprising, as she was a 1 in a 1,000,000 person. Her courage throughout her illness was incredible and her entire focus was on caring for Werner, despite her own ill health. When Werner passed away in December, we believe Leona was finally able to let go, knowing that everyone was taken care of and her job was done. We cannot wish Mom back to keep suffering and we are so grateful for all that she has meant to so many people. The family would especially like to thank the Rushfords, Wygieras, and Bev Jans for their constant love, help, and support, along with those who have helped celebrate Mom’s life along the way. Thank you to Dr. Monty Van der Westhuizen and the staff of St. Joseph’s Carmel Hospice for their wonderful care. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Tuesday, April 15, 2014, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and again one hour prior to the funeral service. The Funeral Service will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Julianna and Garth Wehrfritz-Hanson co-officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to AJ’s Loan Cupboard, P.O.
