.1925 ~ TURKOSZ ~ 2014
Stanley Turkosz, beloved husband of Elisabeth “Elsie” Turkosz of Medicine Hat, passed away at the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital on Saturday, January 11th, 2014 at the age of 88 years, just 18 days short of 89. Stanley is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Elsie; his two sisters, Helen Knutson of Medicine Hat and Julia Lenfesty of Drumheller; his brother-in-law, Kurt (Patricia) Staniek of Kapuskasing, Ontario and numerous nieces and nephews. Stanley was predeceased by his parents, Joseph (February 18th, 1975) and Mary (July 11th, 1975) Turkosz; two brothers-in-law, Harold Knutson and Doug Lenfesty; and his in-laws, Mr. and Mrs. Staniek. Stanley attended Millard School and Jenner High School. In 1943 while in Grade 11, he was called into the army, training in Calgary, Wetaskiwin, Delbert, Nova Scotia, and St. John’s, Newfoundland. He received an honorable discharge and started his new life farming with his dad and working as a hired hand driving truck and shoveling wheat and coal. Stan also worked for the UBU Ranch. In 1957 he met Elisabeth Staniek who had immigrated from Berndorf, Austria with her parents and young brother in 1950. They were married in 1958 and celebrated 55 years of marriage. After 17 years on the farm, Stan and Elsie retired to Medicine Hat and enjoyed travelling to Austria, Barbados, Disneyland, California and Florida, Washington State, Oregon, and British Columbia, where they had a timeshare at Fairmont. Stan or “Mr. T.” as Elsie lovingly referred to him, enjoyed camping, fishing, gardening, and visiting friends. He also enjoyed bowling in the senior league for many years. Stan was very musical and everyone enjoyed listening to him play his button accordion. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #1732, the Royal Canadian Legion #17, and the Moose Lodge #1073. Stan will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him. The Funeral Service will be held in SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, #1 Dunmore Road SE, on Thursday, January 16th, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. with Father Alphonse Narisetty officiating. Interment will follow in the Family Plot at Saamis Prairie View Cemetery. Mrs. Norma Schlaht, beloved wife of Mr. Ferney Schlaht of Burstall, passed away on Friday, January 10th, 2014 at the age of 64 years. Norma also leaves to cherish her memory one step-daughter, Marci Schlaht; her siblings, Lavina (Ron) Steinkey, Glen (Mary Ann) Bishoff, Wayne (Debbie) Bishoff, Claudette (Gary) Eirich, Neil (Corinne) Bishoff and Vera Bishoff; one sister-in-law, Wanda Bishoff; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Norma was born on April 4th, 1949 at Leader, SK and raised at Liebenthal, SK. She completed school there and eventually went into the medical profession and became an RNA. She traveled through Europe in the late 70s and later would enjoy more travel time with her husband, Ferney, whom she married on August 7th, 1981. Norma had a passion for music, having her own band at one time and was talented enough to play both the accordion and piano which she taught herself to do at the ripe old age of 4. She worked extensively with children, teaching them the proper way of singing and how to make beautiful music. Norma also developed a keen sense for crafts including crocheting, needlepoint, petie point, cross stitch and anything else that required a needle and thread. She had her own drapery business in her basement and made the most beautiful draperies for many customers from miles around. Also included in her hobbies were creating ceramic dolls, painting wood crafts and interior decorating as well as a strong love for gardening. When Norma was healthy enough, she would join in helping the local ladies auxiliary making meals for upcoming events, volunteering time for certain school projects, as well as being the pianist at St Michael’s Church in Burstall for some 25 or more years. All of these activities would help her to forget about the constant pain that had gripped her body from a young age. Keeping busy was her therapy to the happiness she enjoyed for so many years with friends and family. Vigil Rites (prayers) will be said at SAAMIS MEMORIAL FUNERAL CHAPEL, #1 Dunmore Road SE, on Wednesday, January 15th, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. with Reverend Dr. Shane P. Andrus officiating. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated in HOLY FAMILY PARISH, 1451 Strachan Road SE, on Thursday, January 16th, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. with Father Philip Le, celebrant. Nancy Fay Czember of Medicine Hat, passed away on Friday, January 10th, 2014 at the age of 54 years. Nancy leaves to cherish her memory her son, Chris Czember; one granddaughter, Sydney Dorchak; her parents, Archie and Betty Daffy; one brother, Randolph (Brenda) Daffy; two sisters, Kim (Dennis) Ulrich and Cindy (Murray) Bertsch; three nieces, Nicole Daffy, Sylvia Ulrich, and Andrea (Shane) Bennett; and three nephews, James Daffy, Curtis (Anita) Ulrich, and Evan (Allison) Bertsch.
