WATERTON, Alta. – Parks Canada has approved the design for a controversial new visitor centre being built in the middle of the village in Waterton Lakes National Park.

The $7.6 million centre will be located along Windflower Avenue, near the Townsite Campground and a busy playground – a location that has raised concerns about traffic and safety in the small community.

Its design will use wood and stone to fit with the national park style and include a natural-materials playground.

Officials say they will finalize a detailed design of the centre and an environmental assessment on the site this fall.

Construction of the new visitor centre is set to begin in 2019, with an expected opening of 2021.

The former visitor centre burned down in the wildfire last summer, but the planning to build the new one was already underway.
