EDMONTON – Vandals have caused around $20,000 in damage at an Edmonton cemetery.
Officials with Mount Pleasant cemetery tell CTV Edmonton a staff member arrived at work Tuesday morning to find about 50 gravestones had been pushed to the ground.
Teena Changarathil, supervisor of cemetery sales and operations, says they are surprised and shocked.
She says it looks like it was a planned attack involving “more than just a few people.”
She says the damage was not limited to one area but several parts of the cemetery.
It’s the largest case of vandalism there’s been at the burial ground.
“I mean, there might be a few things here and there, like a broken vase or kicked-off monument,†Changarathil said, but nothing of this scale.
Police say there were surveillance cameras and they hope the video will help investigators.
Meanwhile, crews are working on repairing the damaged headstones. Officials said families will have to go through their insurance companies to repair stones with extensive damage.
