HALIFAX – A court martial continues today for a sailor accused of sexually assaulting a subordinate, a day after court heard emotional testimony from the complainant.
A Halifax sailor told a military court he woke up in his bunk to a superior performing oral sex on him while the navy destroyer they were aboard was visiting Spain in 2015.
The leading seaman was testifying in Halifax at the standing court martial for Master Seaman Daniel Cooper, who has pleaded not guilty.
The man, whose name is protected by a publication ban, said he had some drinks with other crew members in Spain before returning to HMCS Athabaskan.
He says he had more to drink on board before going to bed, then waking to find someone in his bunk performing a sexual act on him and repeating a sexual phrase.
The man became emotional when he told the hearing he recognized the voice to be that of Cooper, a naval communicator at Canadian Forces Base Halifax.
