CHHS multimedia teacher receives PM’s Award at a ceremony in Ottawa

A Medicine Hat teacher has received one of Canada’s highest teaching awards.

Donna Armstrong, a Grades 7-12 multimedia and communication technology teacher at Crescent Heights High School, received a Prime Minister’s Award for Teaching Excellence at a ceremony Wednesday in Ottawa.

It carries a $5,000 cash prize.

Armstrong, one of 11 national-level recipients of the 2018 PMA for Teaching Excellence, received a Certificate of Excellence from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the ceremony to celebrate Canada’s top teachers and early childhood educators.

A press release from the prime minister’s office said Armstrong is “a lifelong learner and creative thinker … (and) contributes to education both locally and abroad.An informed, perceptive and passionate advocate of the safe, ethical and respectful use of media and the Internet,” Armstrong says she has three rules for her classroom: trust, respect and performance.

The Prime Minister’s Awards for Teaching Excellence honour outstanding and innovative elementary and secondary school teachers in all disciplines.

Recipients are recognized for their leadership and exemplary teaching practices, as well as for their commitment to help the next generation of Canadians gain the knowledge and skills needed for future success in a world inspired by ideas and driven by innovation.

The awards, offered at the Certificate of Excellence (national) and Certificate of Achievement (regional) levels, carry cash prizes of $5,000 and $1,000 respectively. Each recipient receives a pin, as well as a letter and a certificate signed by the prime minister.Armstrong was in transit Thursday and unavailable for comment.
