Suspicious package turns out to be someone’s forgotten bag

The suspicious package found at Scotiabank this weekend appears to be a bag left behind by someone sleeping in the entranceway, say Medicine Hat police.

“We looked at the video cameras, and found that a couple people were sleeping in the entrance,” said Sgt. Mike Fischer with the MHPS. “And when they left before people started showing up for work, they forgot one of their bags.”

Streets were blocked off for a couple hours Saturday, as MHPS’s explosive disposal unit was called to the downtown bank branch after the bag was discovered.

The incident has “absolutely no relation” to bomb-threat incidents that occurred in October and November of last year, said Fischer.

In those incidents, four separate bomb threats were received over two weeks at two banks in the Crescent Heights neighbourhood. Police believe these incidents were linked, but no one has been arrested. Due to this, the investigation files for these incidents are still open, said Fischer.
