Bail was granted Monday to a 43-year-old man who allegedly stabbed a woman with a knife during a domestic dispute.

Crown opposed the accused’s release during the hearing at the Medicine Hat Provincial Court, while a defence-requested publication ban prevents any evidence or information from the hearing being published.

Medicine Hat police report that at approximately 1 a.m. on Feb. 15, members responded to an Assist EMS call for service after a report of a woman requiring medical assistance in the 100 block of Second Street NE.

Upon arriving at the scene, police learned the woman and a man had been involved in a domestic dispute, and the woman had been stabbed. The woman was transported to hospital for treatment of her injuries.

The man was arrested at the scene.

James Walker of Medicine Hat was charged with aggravated assault, assault and several breaches of his court-ordered release conditions from previous charges — including being at the victim’s residence, consuming alcohol and being in possession of a weapon. These breaches stem from release conditions of domestic assault charges from late 2017.

Walker was granted bail on a $3,500 no-cash surety put forward by a friend, who will allow him to live with her under 24/7 house arrest. Walker is only allowed to leave the residence while under supervision of the surety.

No alcohol or drugs are allowed at the residence, while a no-contact order has been put in place with the victim.
