The Medicine Hat branch of JMH Chartered and Professional Accountants on Tuesday presented a $50,000 cheque to APEX Southeast Alberta Regional Innovation Network, which supports local entrepreneurs, for its new Business Challenge.

APEX is a partnership between Alberta Innovates, Medicine Hat College and Community Futures Entre Corp.

Tracy Stroud, manager of business development at MHC, expressed her gratitude on behalf of APEX for JMH’s largesse.

“We’re so excited to officially announce that JMH is now the primary sponsor of the APEX Business Challenge. Startups working with Community Futures and Medicine Hat College through the APEX business incubator will get a chance to pitch for awards of up to $10,000 for their business,” said Stroud.

The pitches will occur in May 2018, she added.

Sean Blewett, general manager of Community Futures, said JMH shares its aim of providing new businesses with a boost.

“Our goal is no matter where an entrepreneur enters the system, they’ll be guided and supported along their journey and connected with specific programming to assist them in being successful,” he said.

JMH has offices in Medicine Hat, Brooks and Calgary.

“Each employee in our offices comes with their own unique set of skills, which provides us with the ability to provide a wide variety of services to a number of different industries,” said Drew Jackiw, who’s been an accountant with JMH since 2009.

“Our primary role is taxation, as everybody expects, but we do also provide some other services. All of our services have one goal in mind — to provide our clients with financial success.”

Jackiw said APEX promotes all three of JMH’s criteria for establishing a partnership — education, innovation and economic growth.

“It was almost like this APEX partnership was meant to be,” he said.
