Local fire crews battle afternoon grassfire

Medicine Hat News

Medicine Hat fire crews spent Wednesday fighting a “significant” grassfire just east of the Canalta Centre.

It was a “pretty major grassfire,” said deputy fire chief Lance Purcell, occurring in a field used to grow hay, and the fire getting into hay bales.

Firefighters were able to get it under control, but remained on scene to tear apart bales. There have also been some flare-ups due to the wind.

As of late Wednesday afternoon, the exact size of the fire hadn’t been confirmed, nor the cause of it.

Purcell reminded the public that the area remains in dry conditions, meaning higher risks of grassfires.
