A three-day preliminary hearing has been set for the second of two Medicine Hat men charged with second-degree murder after a New Year’s Eve homicide.
Defence counsel representing Leonard Robert Terence Beaulieu appeared in court Tuesday to officially set a preliminary hearing date for Dec. 13-15.
Held before a judge, a preliminary hearing will determine if there is enough evidence to proceed to trial.
Beaulieu was charged alongside Luke Boxell following the death of 21-year-old Jordan Pede on New Year’s Eve. Pede was found injured at Strathcona Island Park, and later died in hospital. Police have called the homicide a drug deal gone wrong, with a gunshot wound determined as the cause of death.
Boxell, who is currently on release with strict bail conditions, will have his preliminary hearing on Dec. 4-6.
Beaulieu is currently in custody at the Calgary Remand Centre, with a bail hearing set for Aug. 14.
