Maple Creek man fined for running down antelope with ATV

By Medicine Hat News on January 11, 2017.

A Maple Creek man has been fined nearly $3,300 after he ran down an antelope with an off-road vehicle that had three young people on board.

A Government of Saskatchewan release states that the man plead guilty in provincial court recently to violations of the Wildlife Act after an off-duty game officer observed the incident about 25 kilometres south of Maple Creek in October.

According to the release the officer observed a side-by-side ATV driving back and forth in a field at a high rate of speed. It then appeared to run over something and the occupants then loaded what appeared to be a carcass into the box and headed for a stand of trees while the game officer approached.

The officer contacted an on-duty official who arrived and found a mature pronghorn in the trees and charged Jonathon Hofer, 45, with chasing a big game animal with a vehicle.

Hofer also received a one-year hunting and trapping suspension from the date of conviction.
