It’s a story most musical groups couldn’t even imagine.
Simon Ivascu, Steven Ivascu and Wesley Pop fled Romania as teenagers after deciding they could not follow through with that country’s mandatory army service due to their strong faith and the restriction on freedom of worship in the army. Simon Ivascu and Pop in particular faced the nightmare of being locked in total darkness in a shipping container for two weeks on their journey from Romania to Italy.
Soon after arriving the group began singing together and fell in love with southern gospel after hearing it for the first time. In 2001 the Freedom Singers was officially born.
The group is set to perform in Medicine Hat on Thursday at the Business Men’s Fellowship Christmas Banquet. The event takes place at the Medicine Hat Lodge starting at 6:30 p.m.
