Re: “Fixed-wing ambulance contract up in the air,” May 18
It would be a travesty if Medicine Hat loses this service.
On a personal note a couple of years ago this service saved my wife’s life when the medical staff at the hospital here in town could not stop her internal bleeding. She was flown to Calgary, receiving blood transfusions en route. I was informed by the surgeon who operated on her in Calgary it was a very close call, so you can imagine how thankful I was the aircraft did not have to come from Calgary to start with.
That said, it leads me to the statistics reported in the article, that in 2012/13 there were 641 air ambulance flights/transfers from Medicine Hat to Calgary. And then in 2013/14 a rise to 651. Is it me or does that seem a ridiculous amount of transfers from a so-called state of the art hospital? And does it not bring into question why so many? However, these numbers alone should be enough for anyone to see that it would not be in the best interest of this corner of Alberta for this service to not be based in the area.
