Disgusted by carbon tax, feeling humiliated

By Letter to the Editor on February 17, 2017.

I feel once again disgusted that these so-called government people believe they can do whatever they want and stuff garbage down our throats. I received the so-called rebate to help out with this putrid carbon tax. It says they deposited $100 into my account. I don’t use direct deposit. I feel totally disgraced, as I believe the carbon tax will cost every individual $3,000 to $5,000 per year in extra costs. It is not just about heating, transportation and hydro. Everything we buy is connected and it will go right down the line in prices rising, especially food.

To think governments think we are so stupid that we can be humiliated like this. Mind you, the stuffed the metric system, GST, etc. It happened. How did we let it? The whole population should have marched on legislatures and parliament and stopped this. None of it has helped the people, it’s just taken more money from the public and given it to government to waste and give to themselves. Now people, you have to realize that the great picture boy down east is going to carbon tax us some more. All for nothing, as people have been forced to cut corners already, or lost their homes.

What you believe and feel is irrelevant because it’s all based on false information. Your so-called extra costs are INSANELY inflated, and will actually cost more than half the province NOTHING, through rebates. You may be elderly, but you’ve got a lot of growing up to do.
Companies inflate gas prices $0.10 every long weekend to line their pockets even more and no one bats an eye, but add a $0.04 tax to it and use the money to make some desperately needed positive changes and everyone loses their minds.
Don’t worry, your precious PC or Wildrose candidates can make all their lip-service promises to repeal it knowing full well you buy it hook line and sinker and they’ll never have to actually do it because every country is already implementing the same model, and our federal government is following suit anyway.
As for lambasting the government for doing exactly what they said they would do throughout their campaign, don’t you find that the least bit ironic? Countless governments before, all PC, made promises they never intended to keep, while the NDP has done everything they said they would and yet get constant grief. This is what the majority voted for.
Bottom line, climate change is real, and we’re fighting to slow or stop it. We’ll save your “behind” while you wail, whine, and complain the who way.
The real embarassment is uneducated and uninformed individuals like yourself have as much influence as those of us who actually pay attention and do our own research without being spoon-fed conservative talking points.

@banjokaz Boy have you got it right and this comes from a guy who supported the conservatives for about 28 years prior to Ralph Klein. My conservative friends and I are really sick and tired of listening to these guys who claim to be conservatives and haven’t a clue of what it means to be one. They whine about the Liberals and the NDP, but can’t explain why they supported Ralph Klein, whom my family had known since the early 1960s. Klein always bragged about being a being a Liberal, even as mayor of Calgary. He was neither Liberal, or Conservative he was a dictator and he destroyed this province.

Maybe instead of whining about the Carbon Tax that the oil industry knew we desperately needed McKee should look at his $100. as a small recovery of the thousands of dollars the Klein, Stelmach, and Redford governments have cost him with their deregulation. A retired Electrical Engineer was telling us,about five years ago, that he figured deregulation has cost senior couples at least an extra $35,000. Why wouldn’t it have.

It was comedian George Carlin who correctly stated:” Never underestimate the power of stupid people”.
It was never more true than what we saw happen in Alberta and what we are seeing in the U.S.

It was a retired Exxon employee from Texas, who had worked in Calgary for Imperial oil who said to me in 1997 “I think you Albertans are the dumbest people on the planet. When I asked why he stated “You people are idiots for letting your government give away your oil the way they are , don’t you people realize it’s non-renewable”. There’s the reason why we are in financial ruin and Alaska and Norway aren’t. Oilmen tell me they think we should have $300 billion in our Heritage Savings and Trust Fund, Albertans shouldn’t be paying any provincial taxes, property taxes should be next to nothing and we should still have the best health care and education systems in North America like we had under Lougheed.

I think it’s time guys like McKee, who enjoy being treated like a moron, kept their sarcastic remarks to themselves and stopped insulting the intelligence of true-blue Alberta conservatives who were smart enough to put a stop to an obvious dictatorship. There was certainly nothing conservative about them.
