Fans of ‘The Simpsons’ might remember a mid-1990s episode that began with Homer and Marge at the Candy Industry Trade Show. Upon entering, Homer, runs from booth to booth grabbing handfuls of candy samples and stuffing them into his face, barely getting out the words ‘exquisite’ and ‘brilliant.’
That’s similar to what I felt like at the Alberta Food and Beverage Expo on Saturday, but I kept it a little classier than Homer did.
Local and out-of-town restaurants and breweries were packed into the Cypress Centre feeding the hungry and thirsty masses.
Attendees feasted on everything from chicken and fish tacos to stuffed mushrooms and pizza courtesy of some of the best restaurants in the city. Upstart local breweries Hell’s Basement and Medicine Hat Brewing. Co. stood alongside more established companies like Big Rock and Grizzly Paw, impressing everyone with their brews.
If you left hungry or thirsty, you did it wrong.
Beyond the food and drink (a quick suggestion for next year: More food samples), the spirit of support and camaraderie among the vendors was impressive to see. An expo like this in a relatively small market coupled with a new craft brewery popping up somewhere in Western Canada about once a week could easily lead to unhealthy competition among them.
That was far from the case. One booth would recommend you hit another booth just down the aisle, and they would always be talking each other up. They brew companies all seem to understand that the success of another doesn’t necessarily mean failure for themselves, but actually that a rising tide lifts all ships.
